Usually I wouldnt be in this situation as I rely on regular oil changes,but the 98 disco is full of tar in place of oil due to regular neglect.Frankly I never expected it to keep going so it hasnt had a change this year with the obvious results.

Now I wondering whether to use some flush to start shifting it.I had planned to drain,fill,run,drain,fill,run and then put the final fill in.New filter each time.And yes,it is that bad.

Its not (just!) that I am very cheap....but would I not be as well served using some diesel or kero and maybe a little detergent instead of a branded flush.To get the crap loosened for the oil to move and carry out with it on the drain,that is.....anyone ?
 
I reckon flushing that would be a bad idea, bits of **** going eveywhere, best remove the sump and give it a proper clean.
I think on a disco you can remove the sump in situ but need to jack the front of the car up and drop the front anti roll bar from the chassis brackets.

No mate,300 oil pump not so easy to come at. Remember I was talking about adding some flush solvent then draaining,filling,run for a couple of hours and draining,refilling and running for a couple of days then draining and finally filling and leaving.New filters at each stage. I cant take this off the road to take the sump off as,due to personal circumstances, I need a vehicle ready at all times and this is the only one I have.

JM...what do you suggest as a high detergent oil ?

Branded flushes work well, to well in fact, on an old engine I wouldn't recommend it, try to use a strong detergent oil then change it after 200 miles, the scuddy oil will get caught in the filter so you must change it. Change it again after 1000 miles and all should be well.
 
if you read the lable flushes tend to be just paraffin(kerosene)sold in small expensive quantities ,and engine additives are mostly all petroleum naphtha (lighter fluid)

Nah! mate, not trying to get a response from you at all. But being polite costs nothing and means so much. :cool:

But I am wondering how the likes of F4, Duckworths and Hobsons manage without your talent on board guru. ;)
