Hi All
New to the forum but hopping to get a bit of advise, fistly i am not sure if this is were i should post this thread and apologies if its wrong.

I have a freelander 1.8 Xei petrol and i have noticed a vibration almost like a hum through the steering wheel its not constant at any speed although it does tend to happen over forty, and sometimes it doesnt happen at all like the other day i did 100 miles and it did not appear once then another day i can do 20 miles and it appears.

I think the problem is to do with the viscous coupling between the front and rear propshaft, but what i would like some advise about is that i have seen a damper repair kit which is a lot cheaper than a new viscous coupling, how do i know if its the damper that needs changing or the coupling itself.

Sorry gor the long post and the long winded question but i need alittle advise.

Cheers
Steve

Steve sounds like a bearing somwhere other than the viscous coupling itself. You could try removing the propshaft initially and see if this cures it. If it does its likely to be either the prop itself or the bearings either side of the viscous coupling. If not it could be any number of things.:welcome2:

thnks Tonyt37
Its in for MOT today so hopefully they will pick it up but not sure they will as the fault is intermittent, excuse the probably stupid queswtion but the fault only occurs when the freelander is moving and i am not aa mechanic far from it but how would i drive the vehicle with the prop shaft removed

sorry if this is a dumb question but as stated i know very little about cars

Regards and thanks

Sorry
Just realised this has a viscous coupling so i am assuming you mean remove 1 prop and turn the vehicle into 2 wheel drive

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Thanks

remove the prop front to back inc VCU. Quite easy. You will need some torx sockets for the front. You will have to do this if the VCU bearings are faulty anyway.. Car is fine to drive with prop removed.
