Right folks need some advice here. Does this sound like dicky alt?
We can probably get some tools to Griff, how much of a pig is it to do if he can get an exchange?

Everywhere will close up for Xmas soon and he'll be stuck for ages unless we can help out

hi all again

thank you very much for the phone call :)

next question is

just jumped the car and started first time off junp leads, i need to drive another 50 miles today to get to my xmas home ,

will i be ok once the car is started to drive that distance as long as i have no lights, radio etc on ???????

bat was showing 10 when engine turned off ,once started and tested again theres no sign of alt pushing any jucie to bat

Do you have a working battery light? A failed bulb or wiring can cause alt not to charge

Does your alt have black plug and wire clip as Lucas plugs burn out and repair kit from motor factors £5

If the alternator isn't charging the battery you won't have enough battery power to drive 50 miles. The engine will flatten the battery when it's running as you drive if it isn't charging it. You should be reading just over 14 volts approx with the engine running and alternator charging the battery. Make sure yer measuring DC volts and not AC volts across the battery.

Looks like the alternator is at the lower front of the td4 engine. Check the drive belt is ok. Check the electrical connection (big wire) is secure. There should also be another plug connection with small wires. Check that's secure.

I assume from ^^^^^^ it is a TD4 freelander?

easiest trick is to try and swap batteries with a charged one.

what happens if you ground little wire to alt - does batt light come on dash? if yu can - looks like its a bugger to get to - Hippo????
