Hi

Need advice ... sealant...seal....or replace..

Sorry to be so vague. but on my rangie 4.4 v8 under the bonnet, there is a unit made out of 3/4 metal and 1/4 plastic top. I though it was the steering fluid. It was not. I have checked all the PDF under bonnet docs i found on here. All I can make out is its some kind of oil thing (filter) as its leaking oil from what I can only think is a seal between the plastic top and the metal bottom. It has a hexagon nut on the plastic top part which is part of the plastic its self. It has a torque spanner measurement written n the plastic by the nut. Home you guys know what I am talking about fro the description. Its leaking where the plastic meets the metal. I have tried to tighten (carefully) due to torque measure written. On the understanding you know what I am talking about then... My plan is to open it up and put some sealant on it,,, or put a seal on it..... or last result go buy a second hand unit and replace. standing in the front of the car, its to the right of the rad and near the water reservoir

Cheers

Thats the Oil Filter Housing....

Should be an O Ring...

I'll just check RAVE and MicroCAT

EDIT: as attached....

Fantastic that's...

It looks easy to put a O ring seal on will i need some sealant like you use on gaskets etc.

Replacing unit would be stupid just get a new filter and o ring seal and some dollop, K&N oil filter should be fine unless there is better.

?

Oh and thanks for your fast sterling reply

No need to use gasket sealant....

When fitting the O Ring, it is wise to lube it up using clean engine oil, so it doesn't snag and tear!

Excellent

I will order O ring online somewhere.

Undo twist top off put O ring on and tighten it up

I will check to see if there is a special tool to do the correct torque as it says, as I am a bit heavy handed and don't want to over tighten

Cheers

A K&N oil filter?

Thanks for the help.

My last question as above was do i ghave to drain oil from beside sump as some people have sugguest online. I was of the understanding all i need to do is unscrew replace filter and o ring and tighten . dont even need the tool to undoo it as a 36mm socket will do the job?

No need to drain the sump but put a container underneath as you will spill some oil.
Might be a good idea to do an oil and filter change at the same time if it has not been done recently.

Shouldn't have to drain the Sump as the filter is higher than the Engine in the bay and after use most of the oil will drain down into the sump....although a little spillage may occur

Shame I didnt see this sooner !!
Advise for you use land rover oil filter and o ring !!!

I changed mine with non genuine first time I did it. Lasted 3-4k miles before it started leaking oil.
What I found was the rubber had hardened near enough to a plastic texture!!!! when it leaked it just came out as if the lid was not tight.

I also found that non genuine filter fell apart and didnt hold its shape for 5K

Only know this as I do oil and filter change every 5k

You can just buy the o ring from from land rover but to be fair the oil filter is not that expensive

Cheers all

all done resonably easy just need to be gentle when twisting the pot.... little too hard the o ring pops little too soft and the o ring doesnt seal leaky times. So its just right now and no leaks and its sealed now just need to clean the engine bay of spilt oil may pressure wash carefully or by hand deppending on whats down in that corner

Anyways diversing .....cheers guys as always
