Could really do with some quick feedback here. I recently took my 2001 TD4 (98,000 miles) in for a service at my local LR dealer and told them that at idle i was getting a lot of thick white smoke. On collection of the vehicle i was told that they had checked all sensors, pipes and looked at the turbo which they stated was showing distinct signs of wear and would need replacing very soon. They gave me a price of £1700 to replace the turbo (parts & labour). I decided that this sounded a bit steep so i went out and bought a reconditioned turbo for £450 thinking that it would be reasonably easy to find an independant to fit it at a reasonable price.
Two weeks later and the smoking is now considerably worse to the point that the vehicle can not be driven on the roads.
I still have been unable to find anyone willing to undertake the job in the Malvern/Worcestershire area. Does anyone know of a local (to me) independant capable of doing this work for me? I really need the vehicle for work and am getting desperate.

We would like to carry out an inspection of the engine first because there are other issues which can cause a TD4 to go smokie other than the turbo.

Many thanks for your reply. With you being in Dudley, it's a little far for me to get the vehicle over to you and then collected afterwards. I have now managed to get APB at Hartlebury to do the work next week.
I appreciate your comments on the potential other causes but we've gone in to this quite extensively and are pretty sure the turbo is on its last legs.
