Landy79

I have a 1979 petrol 4 cyl landy that I have just bought to restore but not sure if the engine is ok to use on unleaded or with additive? The engine was at some stage a light green colour and writing spray stenciled on the side of the rocker cover reads " Reserved ECO 2 7/93 ".

Has anyone seen this before or anyone have any ideas?
I am assuming that it's a recon built in July 93 to Eco 2 spec???

Any help would be much appreciated

If its a land rover motor it'll be a 2.5 petro and unlead will work they are not fussy drinkers:D

If it's the original engine then it's most likely the 2.25 (2286cc). I think the main thing to convert it would be to replace the valves but I don't know how to check, sorry.

you can use it on unleaded it takes years for valve seats to wear ,to make it unleaded you remove exhaust valves and fit hardened steel seats ,if its completely painted one colour its been reconned at some time although if military that could be good or bad military reconditioning at that time was a gravy train for a lot of companies as there was no come back for failures they just went round system again ,you can tell if seats are fitted as the steel seats are light in colour but head and exhaust valves need to be removed ,inlets can be done as well but not necessary for unleaded as they dont have hot gasses passing through

Ok here are the facts, you need to check engine code

If the codes are 10H,11H,or 13H than it's a 2.25

If he code is 17H than it's a 2.50

hope this helps:rolleyes::rolleyes:

No obvious way that I know to check if it's unleaded or not. I've run mine with Castrol lead substitute for years and I've seen little change in the tappet settings so I suppose the valve seats are OK.

I am using the additive myself too but I am just curious to find out if anyone else has heard of the kind of markings that I have on my rocker cover, like I said it says eco2 and 7.93 so I would assume it's ok for unleaded ?

If the '7' stood for the compression ratio - some of the engines were for low quality fuel and so i would have thought likely to have had hardened seats.

If it was rebuilt in '93 i agree that it had probably been converted as '93-'97 was the popular period for converting to unleaded heads.

Somehow you need to find out what that info means?

I've a feeling that's why he started the thread :doh::hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

if its lightgreen/blue then could well be ex mil recon unit .
Dont worry about stripping to see if unleaded conversion , run untill it starts misfiring , you will see if unleaded then , you will have to wait a long time tho , as they will run on unleaded for ages esp if not thrashed for long periods or worked hard ! HTSH
