get the one you can work on not the one that will always need to go into a very expensive garage, I have experience of X5, propshaft dropped off 5000, it needed a clutch kit 1200, pass anything but a bank or a fuel station you will need deep pockets!!

Don't get a Honda CRV, No one seems to have a good word for them except their salesmen. Consider a Kia Sportage, you get a lot of car for your money and they are quite capable.

I still say get another freelander though.

We have a kia sportage (2017) and as above it's a great car.
Not quite the panache of the green oval but not a single issue since we bought it at 3 months old.
Lovely to drive and every toy you can think of

You've just reminded me of a neighbour, a few years ago. He was a bit of a "you've got, I have to have". When he realised I was in the Army, he spent hours regaling me of his time as a cadet, I trained every day, and had a gym in the spare room, he decided that he needed a 'gym' in the garage ( resulted in an exercise bike), etc. I bought the Golden Girl, he had a black Kia Sportage. A few months later , he dashed out his door to tell me he was getting a new car, just like mine, same colour as well. What turned up? A khaki coloured Sportage

Ahh not necessarily many manufacturers ride on a reputation they built decades ago, even though quality has fallen by the wayside.
