Ah well, seems I need to replace both gearbox and transfer box (and the clutch for good measure!) Price quoted to me over here is about equivalent to distance to milky way and back. Tempted to look around to see if thete's owt in the UK that I could ship although the time and dosh for shipping may prevent that. Has anybody any experience of shipping heavy items overseas?
Problem that they showed me is the splined shaft that joins the two, the male end from the gearbox is very visibly worn and the female bit in the transfer box is worn smooth.

All helpful suggestions welcome! Anybody about to head down to Spain and have these items lying around and can pop em in their suitcase? :D Gotta larf....or I might cry.......

Hiya matey, long time etc etc. Got drive train troubles then.

Have you considored rebuilding the transfer box with a new input shaft? Relatively straightforward and the bits are much easier to transport from jolly old Angleterre?

Just had a look on Microcat and Rave but can't find the correct names for the bits, but a quick call to Ashcrofts might help you - even if it's only to get the right names for the components in question?

Hi sp33der..i may be driving to Alicante in the next month or so...where are you in spain?

Evening fellers, thanks for ideas. Hi Dave, mange tout mate, mange tout. Thought about repair job but neither me nor the Russkie garage man are convinced that there aren't further problems within the box(es) - something deffo went bang pretty loudly and shook the whole car so currently I'm sticking with the idea of replacement but the cost is massive. Prob cheaper for me to pay someone to drive a rusty condemned Disco down here and I give em 3 or 400 quid for it and pay their air fair home and use the car for spares!! Now theres a thought! Anyone who's about to fail their MOT fancy a last road trip? :)
Appreciate the offer Mr Storm but I guess I need the parts asap as me Disco is sitting on a ramp in a garage at the mo undrivable so I guess they will want it sorted and outa the way soon as pos. And I'm having to rent a car at the mo so the kids can go to school! I'm about an hr and a quarter North of Alicante btw.

Cheers

Well, 'new' boxes arrived yesterday, possibly being fitted today. Got them from UK in the end, was almost half the price of best I could do here. Ta to all who offered assistance. Just wondering - I have heard talk of "the later cross drilled type" for the transfer gear. When did this come in does anyone know? I'm guessing this means there is a pin or something thru to stop the splines wearing out?
Cheers
