Hi

Finally, I decided to stop envying those who has off-roaders and get one of my own. But being very amature offroader, I am starting with something old and cheap.

One vehicle I like is 1984 one-ten. It has 3.5 V8 with LPG conversion, it looks nice (on photos) and i was told it drives well. Price is also affordable.

The only think i am concerned about is that it only has 4 speed gearbox. I am not planning to drive it a lot on motorways, but i do need to be able to get to those wonderfull off-road tracks i keep reading about. So, experts, please advice - should i be concerned about 4 spped gearbox or not really?

I am going to see it within next couple of days. I know i need to look at chassis and expect some rust, but not holes. I know i need to look at bulkhead. But what else? Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Look for Widgets guide to buying a Land Rover, it's in here somewhere came to light the other day, It will tell you everything you ever wanted to know. Can't help on the gearbox front I'm afraid.

The 4 speed gearbox was used in all series land rovers . It is a lot easier to work on than the 5 speed and transfer boxes are easier worked on too. You can always add an o/d .

4 Speed series gearboxs cannot easily be changed to later 5 speed boxes without major changes to axles due to later boxes being Permanent 4WD rather than Part Time 4WD in Series Landys and the fact that apart from the Stage 1 V8 series Landys use UJ's not CV joints. Plus unless you get Stage 1 axle and can only get defender or RR axles you have the problem of the axles being set up for springs not leafers.
Overdrive is the way to go, about £250.
