My turbo has performed its last trip.

If you have or know someone that has one they no longer need please drop me a PM.

I have contacted the dealers and the prices come in at 400 pounds and plus some form some sellers.

If you have replaced the turbo with another make of unit and it worked can you pass this on please.

Really need to be back on the road with this weather!!

Any help welcome!!

Has anyone ever replaced the turbo that was Originally fitted by Landrover with another Make/Model to your motor??

Does anyone know if another turbo can be fitted say from a Rover???
that had the same 2 lt engine but not A Landrover.

How important is it to replace like for like? some turbos have just the last digit changed with the part number but still is used on the L series engine.

I have been able to find all the part numbers for the turbos used throughout the Landrover range. and was very surprised when I noticed that the Landrover turbos are also used with Audi, Vauxhall, Alfa and the list went on.

Can it be done?
would it cause a catastrophic failure?
Would you notice it right away as being the wrong one?

Help please... :confused::confused::confused:

I would imagine that if the flanges are compatible, the turbine wheel, number and angle of blades are the same and the oil banjo bolts are the same, then the only thing left to consider is the waste gate operation pressure setting. Other than that it should be possible to use a donor unit.

That ain't the unit on my L-series!!

The turbos on the L series engine have many, the started off with

1) PMF 100400 452202-0003

2) PMF 100490 452202-0004

they then uprated the first turbo 0003 with a modified unit

3) 452202-5004s.

These turbos are all made by Garrett and carry the prefix GT1549.

The turbo then changed for the TD4.

I have not been able to find a second-hand unit to-date and continue looking.

I am not sure what number is on the turbo you say does not match , But I have been informed that only one of the above three where used in UK made Freelanders.

There are other companies that I understand make a turbo for the freelander but I have not been able to get those part numbers so far.

And my motor is still laid up.....

Can I ask, did you find any numbers on your turbo.

As you said not the number you have on yours?

If you did find the number/ numbers, on your turbo can you let me know what they where

Thanks Pat

Well, what I meant was, this -

darmain-albums-general-picture2401-turbo.jpg

- looks nothing like my turbo.

Its possible this will fit based on your information. I don't have the number of my blower but I will have a look for you (bit dark and chilly out there at the moment, I'll do it tommorrow :D).

BTW, got your PM. :D

Some of the NEWER turbo's have a riveted plate on them however most just had a flat plate as part of the original casting process .

If you have the flat plate type all the info has been etched into the Aluminium, the best way to see this is to get something like wire wool and put some WD40 on it, and get to work.

You will then be able to get the info you now seek !!! :D

Well I had a look. Mine is a Garret, no surprise there I guess. However, the name is part of the turbine side casting and there is no rivetted plate. As far as a number is concerned then there is nothing obvious. The only thing that was obvious was a small oil leak from the compressor side discharge port. Nothing to worry about though. Sorry about that.
