Looks like I may be up for my 3rd landy in 4 months. I bought a ex mod 90 in september last year, and sold that a week or two for a 200tdi 110 csw. Unfortunately, a week later the engine seized due to a broken conrod, and is now sitting in the back of my "mechanic's" "work"shop while he "inspects" it. Looks like it is probably a new engine job, and now my employer says I must move to surrey for a year or two to assist in one of our projects over there. I will need to be making regular trips into london (an hours drive with good traffic) and also to cambridge and thereabouts (about 2 hours drive with good traffic) I will need to be doing both of these trips around once or twice a week, so a defender, especially a broken one just isn't going to do. I definitely want a land rover, as a lot of the sites I visit are only accessible via tracks or by driving cross country (type). Not too serious, but I wouldn't take my "JAAAAG" there. Anyway, I can't afford to run three cars, so I suppose my broken defender will have to go. So basically I need a land rover that will travel big motorway miles during the week and go off roading every weekend. This "off roading" isn't super hard core stuff, nothing a defender would really struggle with, but it's basically lots of mud and top of bumper height wading. So the budget is 10k (although I can go a little over since I get a nice bonus for this move:D) and the vehicle needs a manual transmission, as I can't stand autos. It will obviously have to be quite reliable so I'm thinking a series 1 discovery or vehicle of that era is probably out.
Anyway, what do you recommend?

Disco 1's are as reliable as any car so long as you look after them ... main thing is they are pretty straight forward to repair. The biggest issue with them now is rust.

For 10k you could get a Disco 2, but they do have more electronics to play up. Both models are great at mile munching and for playing in off tarmac.

I agree with that, but I think the thing is with a 20 year old car, especially one like the disco 1, is that most of them aren't babied all their lives, and things are going to be going wrong. I suppose the only landy that really fits my criteria is a disco 2. Problem is, I have heard that they are not as good off road as a series 1, and I am worried about all that electronics as I go through lots of deep fords.

what ever you get, leave it dead standard and it'll munch the miles, get a standard td5 90 and maybe add a snorkle and rear locker, and that'll do ever thing you would want it to and service it lots :)

So are all disco 1s affected by the LEZ? Discovery series 2s are looking quite nice, but do you think all that wading is going to mess with the electrics? If so, is there some kind of kit or something I can do to fix this?

Have you considered a Jap re-imported D1?, they don't suffer the usual rust issue's as UK based cars and have normally not covered many miles ... that's originally what I was looking for until the Mrs decided the funds were needed elsewhere:doh:

Only Commercial ones. Normal Disco 1's are "Estates" and not subject to it.

Makes so much sense

I just checked that disco on the LEZ website and it says that it's not subject to the low emission zone
https://lowemissionzone.tfl.gov.uk/b/pb/lezComplianceProvideVRM.faces#

go figure

Vehicle: S616DNU

25 Jan 2011 to 02 Jan 2012 Not Subject to LEZ
03 Jan 2012 to onwards Non-Compliant

Should have said it would be next year.

It's only meant to apply to commercial vehicles. Unfortunately they consider my 9-seater 110 CSW a minibus therefore has to comply. Will be removing 2 seats over the summer and informing the DVLA so that it'll now be a 7-seater and thus exempt...

Rabnge rover all the way RANGE ROVER 2.5 DSE MANUAL (DIESEL) SPORT EDITION on eBay (end time 02-Feb-11 09:23:54 GMT)
simmonites have a mixed reveiw on here though
Though I don't have first hand experience with p38s, I have heard that they are horrendously unreliable, so this is probably out for me (pity, as I absolutely love them:() I am now seriously considering a series II discovery. Are these as unreliable as a p38? And do you think they will keep up with my weekly off roading? (If I did get one, I would probably fit a lift kit or something like that)
