What started out as a simple job but as usual gets complex -is nearly done. Just pads to fit and then back on the road till the next adventure !! Plus a three day garage clean!

the only thing I am unhappy with is the end float on the rear driveshaft ! it must be around 2mm! that seems excessive- anyone got any advise?

dont worry about it it can do no harm just ensure splines are well greased

cheers for that, be glad when the bloody thing is back on the road! it did drive with no noise prior and nothing is any worse than it was may I add

might have gone a bit ott but pleased with the result. not sure how the hell I will clean the floor but fingers crossed for the test drive as I hope I have cured the original issue - the snatch into second and third gear. I have also noticed a little weep from the joint between the gear and transfer box - can they be split on the vehicle or would you take the whole unit as a pair out to repair this! the clutch was replaced only 10k ago by previous owner.

I tiled it with an industrial tile designed for garages - keeps the dust down

I have seen a few write ups where the T Box is just pulled back , which is what I am going to try and do.

out or slid back enough to get you hand up, its best once new oring is fitted to run a bead of silcone sealant on the box side of the oring so its dragged in to the shaft hole

looking like a full box out as the grunt into second is still evident - gutted - box strip I am afraid!

drove a mates 90 defender (2009) so same as mine - box is exactly the same as mine, quiet and fully operational but a little 'tug' into second gear. ok if a slow the gear change down, is this how they are? seems strange that two vehicles with dissimilar mileage and background have the same trait?
