It is possible to fit one you have to change the center consol above the radio + then you have to get it wired the (cd reader fits in the clove box)

Mine came with a inbult VDO dayton system very similar to the OEM instalation (in-built screen etc)
even with updating the operating system - the system is still a circa 2003 set-up & CD based to boot! ( a real pain if your crossing borders i.e. europe)
ideally a DVD based sysstem is better (had one in a Audi very good indeed)
however for easy of "instalation is it not better to consider one of the portables?

Mine came with a Becker combined radio, CD player and GPS, only disadvantage is you have to insert the data CD at the begining of each journey.
I've set it up with a male voice and am about to introduce it to my Garmin Quest which has a female voice, but am concerned they will either bicker or get too interested in each other to talk to me.

I have been of the opinion that moving to either a Bluetooth capable after market stereo would be the most sensible solution for an older P38 without a satnav system.
The Pioneer AVIC-X1BT has long been the best solution for any car providing Bluetooth, in car entertainment DVD stylee, satnav, Mp3/WMA/AAC capability and has a very impressive sound and 4 x 55 watts with sub out.
Next best solution after market wise would be either the Siemens MS 4400
or perhaps the Blaupunkt TravelPilot Rome Europe NAV56E which agin is another good alternative.
In terms of Tom Tom Go's, I would ill advise it as cars fitted with this type of satnav systems if not careful will get your beloved RR broken into. Leaving suction cup marks or cradles is sign to thieves to break into your car.
Another solution would be something like a Nokia 95 installed with satnav voice software and install a Bluetooth system and connect it to your Stereo.
Just my 2 cents...

The Pioneer is £600 if you know someone in the business of car stereo's (RRP is £1300 odd)
The Blaupunkt and the [SIZE=-1]VDO Dayton MS 4400 [/SIZE]is about £500-£600. Again if you know someone in the car stereo business that price is £250 cheaper.
Its the best option for a P38 RR. If anyone wishes to go for a TOM TOM Go or a Garmin be my guest, but I hope you realise your RR will be broken into at the slightest clue you have a cradle and portable satnav in your car.
Its THE most desirable thing in a car these days.

Ok i had the VDO MS4000 unit when it came - you mention using a combo unit - in my case i wanted to upgrade the stereo and after putting in a DVD JVC unit i took it out and put a grundig hard drive unit in under the passenger seat linked via a FM modulator in the FM antenna feed. it means i have 100`s of hrs of music and it doesnt affect the Orig alpine RR OEM instalation with its door amps etc etc) (but thats another story)
on the Tom Tom sucker - on the grundig head unit it uses heavy duty Velcro type stuff which easily holds the little unit in place - maybe a alternative to the a distictive sucker on the fron windscreen....

Way too expensive for something that you can buy for far less and way better. The old Official satnav isn't great, the CD updates are harder and harder to come by and the screen etc is pretty low res.
If your a P38 purist then this is a great option. To others, this has been superseded by cheaper better options.

To be honest the last website link I had for the P38 SatNav disks has now stopped selling them as the company has ceased trading Josef Kenyon Ltd. If anyone else knows of a company that still sells them, please post it.
If you can't get the update disks, that's one expensive gadget sitting there doing nothing.....wishing you hadn't ripped out the dashboard to fit it.
