Take the cover off and turn the engine over with a socket on the alternator pulley bolt, you will be able to see all of the rockers moving and be able to see if there is a problem in there. You could run the engine with the cover removed - just put lots of rags round it to catch any oil.

When you turn it over by hand REMEMBER the rotation of the engine is CLOCKWISE

Sorry mate, won't be needing that engine. If you get a nice V8 in though, I'm interested
