Take the cover off and turn the engine over with a socket on the alternator pulley bolt, you will be able to see all of the rockers moving and be able to see if there is a problem in there. You could run the engine with the cover removed - just put lots of rags round it to catch any oil.
 
Haha, didn't know they had salesmen in the armed forces! I'll keep that in mind, but I need to see what my landy mechanic says before I start throwing money around :D Nice 90 by the way.

Sorry mate, won't be needing that engine. If you get a nice V8 in though, I'm interested :D
