Afternoon all,

Have another thread going on this problme, but it seems it is more engine related now. I have a video link below of a horrible noise coming from my 300Tdi engine. Is in a Defender 90 non A/C. Any ideas as to what it is would be great. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine.

Cheers, Chris.

You sure there's not a stray tie-wrap or something similar touching the fan? or pulley faces? or belt teeth?

Noe, nothing abnormal with the belt. I did notice that my coolant level has dropped significantly and there are small bubbles in the expansion tank, like you would see in washing up liquid.

Are the injectors properly tight? No splits in hoses, no broken jubilee clips. Hard to say what I'd look at next!

Think I'd take the fan off and see how the pulleys rotate and whether they wobble, checking the bearings of all of them. Waterpump needs checking, thermostat hasn't broken up inside ... just take things apart one by one and see when the noise stops .. ;)

I have the same noise. Thinking its coming from the fuel distribution pump

Air in the fuel causes the pump to rattle just like the noise in the vid.

Best way to see if its air is run the return pipe from the inj pump through a clear pipe, if there are bubbles....fix the hole where air is being drawn in the the fuel system.

Is that the leak off pipe coming from the injectors?

The leak off pipe connects on to it. Its pipe the same size as the one from the filter to the injection pump <--- this one goes to the front of the pump. The return comes out the rear of the pump.

You could use a clear pipe on the feed to the injection pump but youd have to cut something up to do that or have the proper ends.

Using the return you can just push a clear pipe on the metal pipe from the injection pump you can just catch what comes out the end and return to the tank later.

I had exactly the same noise on my disco it came in at 2500 rpm & drove me mad for 3 months|.
hold a screwdriver against the injection pump & put your ear to it if that is where the noise is coming from dont panic try changing the fuel filter first
believe it or not this cured mine this was after shelling out for injection pump overhaul.
