I've just purchased a Nanocom Eveloution to help diagnose a running issue with my New TD5.

It surges quite badly on cold/ cold-ish start up ( I know most do but this is particularly bad and a lot worse than my previous TD5 110) and feels kind of laboured at 60-65 like its having the tits ragged off it. Also getting quite horrible diesel knock at low rpms when pulling away or just having gone up a gear and in the low rev range of that gear.

I've just done my first data logs one this morning and one this afternoon on my way back from work (50min journey) and needless to say I'm hooked on the idea of being able to nerd out over the figures and use them to map graphs e.c.t

What I'm after is any direction of stuff to read up on or tutorials to better understand the outputs and the engineering behind how the figures are calculated and what they show me about the running of my engine.

I had found a youtube video on how to make an interactive map for my turbo compressor although now lost it, but its stuff like that, that if you know of could you point me in the right direction so I can try it for myself and geek out over it.

Also start a discussion over my data, stupid questions id like to ask e.c.t.

I can see my boost pressure goes from 99kpa at idle to 230kpa at 2900rpm at 75mph is that normal? 2.3 bar boost seems a bit high to me?

Anyways I'm babbling now, Thanks in advance!

First give it a service with new oil, oil filter x2, fuel filter and air filter. Clean MAP sensor, check MAF readings on nanocom and check for oil in ecu inj loom replacing if any in there.
Then go from there. All the above is service stuff on a Td5

Thanks for the reply.

I serviced it about 3000 miles ago, full service.

It’s had 1 new injector, all new injector seals (genuine), new MAF, new fpr, new injector harness (infact 2 as first new one was faulty), new (2nd hand ECU), plug constantly checked and cleaned with brake cleaner.

CPS turbo wastegate were checked by a local independent and said good.

so really wondering what else to check.

Im channeling Sierraferry here but what does your MAF show at idle and flat out up a hill on the nanocom? Was it a decent one or aftermarket?
I would also check for boost leaks in intercooler and hoses.
If it was overboosting it would be in limp mode so don’t worry about that. But you should check your wastegate is moving ok under vacuum (or pressure i forget which on a td5!). Take it off (simple job) and it should gave decent resistance but be smooth with full travel.
I dont have a nanocom but there is a thread somewhere where SF lists common parameters on a Td5 and normal readings. Havent got a link to hand
Best of luck

Hi, here is Sierrafery’s suggested readings for a Disco2 ECU (defender should be same but perhaps missing some readings?), so all credit due to him : )
Yoy have read the fault codes have you?

MAF(air flow) = 55-65 at idle growing with revs up to 600 or above at 3000+rpm under heavy load, at 680 the MAF drops to 0 and the ECU reduces fuelling(turbocharger overspeed protection)

AAP(ambient pressure) = real ambient pressure on barometer in kPa, around 100 must drop up to 2 units to 3000+rpm, more decreasing of that value related to the acceleration should indicate that the air beyond the filter is less than required.

AAT(ambient temp) -only Eu3/15-16P engines = real ambient temp on thermometer (not shown)

MAP(manifold absoolute prssure) = with AAP at idle growing to 230 at full load

IAT(inlet air temp) = AAT + 10 to 30 depending on outside temp, engine coolant temp and boost(meaured with coolant gauge at middle)...also it can be much higher if non-cooled EGR is still fitted

COOLANT TEMP = 70 - 115 gauge stays at the midddle, the gauge will go to red zone only at 120 and the electric cooling(aircon) fan kicks in at 110 and stops at 105

FUEL TEMP = around 10 - 20 less than coolant temp depending on ambient temp

THROTTLE
ACCEL. WAY 1 - about 0.3V with the pedal released, about 4.7V with pedal to the maximum position
ACCEL. WAY 2 - about 4.7V with the pedal released, about 0.3V with pedal to the maximum position
ACCEL. WAY 3 – this track must have values very near to the second track.(only 15P-16P engines)
ACCEL. SUPPLY – this value must stay between 4.9 a 5.1
* an up to +0.5V for WAY 1 and -0.5V for WAY 2 are accepted

IDLE ESPEED = 750rpm

IDLE SPEED ERROR – This is a calculated value that shows the difference between the idle speed and the real drive demand

63.9 g/s at idle and 579.5 g/s at 2815 rpm only 55 mph so might have been underlay like going up a hill but can't remember.

The specialist said they had checked the waste gate but to be fair would like to lean how to do it myself so will give it another check at the weekend .

Thanks for the continued help!!
