OK! i've asked about this before. i've had lots of possibilities. and i'm getting annoyed! please please PLEASE! someone help! here is the story:

I have a 1995 300tdi discovery.
it has a VERY loud noise coming from the engine!
the noise, is best discribed as a loud clunk!
the CLUNK is in time with the engine.
engine goes faster, clunking goes faster.
if i speed up and ease off the throttle, clunking goes completely, for 10seconds.
no smoke from the back.
no loss of power.
no loss of oil or coolant.

ALSO

i have no heat in the cab,
and coolant is a murky/rusty colour.
have drained and replaced but still have murky coolant.

THINGS I'VE CHECKED

manifold gasket - changed
water pump - changed
valve gasket - changed
checked all pipes and cables connected
fuel pump and injectors - checked and working fine
no air / oil leaking from the block

the last thing to do, that was suggested to me, is HEAD GASKET! thers no coolant in oil, no oil or air leaking from block. but will change it anyway!
Is there anything else i could be missing? because i have run out of ideas. and i hate being defeated by a LAND ROVER!

Are you sure its coming from the engine and not a wheel (cv joint etc)?? as its in time with road speed.

its the engine. its there when the engine fires up. on idle it clunks at idle speed.
the sound is coming from the engine block. cant pin it down to a location as its so bloody loud my ears cant handle it!

think massey furguson tractor loud!

well, im hoping it is the head gasket! as odd as that sounds! ive not done many miles since it started (3 at the most, and over 6week period) so shouldnt be any damage other than the gasket. ive just ordered a new gasket and head bolts...etc. but need more suggestions..... is it completly FUBAR?

anything like this? [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgtV9H18EwE"]YouTube - TDi Problems - Feb 08[/nomedia]

well according to that article it was a broken crankshaft bearing which means a bottom end overhaul i guess. Also according to them you should have low pressure on one of the cylinders which will tell you what one is broken

that is cam speed, could be push rod bent or pushed thru follower broken tappet ,or valve stem cap ,take rocker box cover of and turn over and check

sounds like one a saw with broken valve spring, from there you dont want to know. Worth lifting rocker cover to have a look.

mine was a result of a screwdriver bit ending up in no.3 piston lol. All sorted now thou. Replacement engine, as it worked out cheaper. The vid of mine that i posted, was after i removed the bit. Was running with a bent no.3 inlet vavle, and a slight exhaust manifold leak.

DORA. she live's. it's been a while, but i've moved home, fixed the mysterious noise and for those who are interested. it was a simple fix. INJECTOR WASHER/SEALS. over looked many times. now she's purrs like a 2.25tonne kitten!

Hi ibought a disco with with that noise and the guy knocked £500 off the asking price so i could buy a new engine. Well its still running 3 years later with the same engine ...all i do is give it a oil and filter change every six months ......
