Whilst fitting the replacement steering box today I heard a tell tale sound of something metal falling from the engine bay and hitting the ground...

Is this part of my Discovery or is it a piece of random junk that's been living in my engine bay for a while?

It dun't look hollow. or threaded internally and the grooved section is ssome sort of an interference type fit. It deffo looks like a retaining pin of some sort I reckon it's the hinge pin off a ford escort or similar.

It dun't look hollow.

It is hollow. Small hole at the pointy end. Larger hole at the other end. Made of Aluminium.

I've got the radiator, intercooler, grill and the chassis coolant rail off at the mo so wondered if it had come of them, but there's nothing obviously missing...

Ye could be right Red;) But from the photies it kinda does look hollow and it's got a hole in the bottom.... and rivnuts thread doesn't start 'till after they splines that ye see on the outside. It was just a complete guess on my part mate, that's why ah said it kinda looks like like...;):D

you have had a new radiator fitted at some time and they work different to the original ones so you need to fit a restrictor to the outlet of the fuel cooler looks like its come out when you removed the pipe make sure you reconnect the bottom to pipes the right way round

PCS000010 COOLING SYSTEM RESTRICTOR | Discovery 2 1998-2004: Engine: Cooling | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series

That's the feller! Thank you.

The cooling system is all original and the hole that the restrictor would fit in is already seemingly ristricted internally.

I'll pop it back in though now I know where it lives :)

My TD5 is not my friend at the moment. I've just finished putting it all back together again after fitting steering box, new PAS pipes and a new chassis coolant rail.

Bled the PAS fluid and ran it up to normal temp and everything is just spiffing! and then an almighty screaming noise started under the bonnet and the PAS pump pully is wobbling like a bastid.

Looks like the front bearing has let go. The shiny bits of metal that are drifting about from it are pretty though...

Are the bearings replaceable on the PAS pump or is it a new pump kinda job?
