Hi Folks

In my earlier posts, a mere three days after I bought it, my camshaft decided to retire, and for almost a month (albeit over christmas) it went into a landrover specialist to be repaired.

Camshaft was done, engine runs lovely and the purr of the V8 is superb!

However, it developed an oil leak during the rebuild...and it cannot be traced. I had lost a bit of faith in the specialist and decided to take the car away anyway. They believed it was engine oil as it was running clear which would match fresh oil after the rebuild....however I have religiously checked the oil levels and it hasn't moved a millimetre in 2 weeks.

I decided to put it into another specialist, and paid £60 to be told they also couldn't trace the leak, but believed it to be the gearbox oil cooling pipes, however as there was so much oil sprayed on the bottom, they would need it cleaned before they could really tell.

I cleaned the engine yesterday, and decided to check the levels in the gearbox and top up, if it was the oil cooler that was leaking. Bearing in mind the car was slightly elevated at the front, when I took out the fill plug, it spewed oil.

So, newbie question one: Should there be as much oil as that in the gearbox?..I would have thought it would have been definitely below the fill lip as the car was elevated at the front.

Question two: Does the cooler take oil from the gearbox and cool it, or simply pass through the gearbox to cool it? (Pipe inside similar to an element)

Question three: are there any other oil reservoirs that I should be checking?

I'm getting fearful of using it in-case something goes crunch and costs me a fortune.

Thanks for all your help in advance

ATF is red and your troubles will soon be over since you empty it out:flame2::D

Auto box oil level is checked with the engine cold and idling after moving the gearlever slowly through all gears slowly and back to park. If you did it without the engine running, you will have lost a lot of oil and it will need refilling.
Assuming yours is a V8, the gearbox oil cooler is in the bottom of the RAD I think. Cooler pipes leaking are well known.
Power steering, Transfer box, Diffs should also be checked.

Autobox oil cooler (21) on the V8 is at the front under the engine oil cooler (17).

Leaks from the swaged joints for the oil cooler and ATF cooler are common with cars this age. I've just repaired my oil cooler hoses, swaged joints were spraying oil all over the bottom of the car. I think I've fixed it now!

Obviously someone did not read the thread the other day when i said you MUST run engine and move through gears before removing level plug. Car also needs to be level when checking.
