This bracket was attached to the back of my land rover when I bought it. It was mounted vertically to the right of the rear door with the hooks at the bottom.

Any ideas what it might be?

I tried to get a hi-lift to fit just now but no luck. I was hoping it might be for some type of Jerry can but hasn't worked on any of the ones I have.

how high up was it fitted...looks homemade...maybe to transport something such as a small outboard if it was up high...what size is it...

An outboard motor might be more the kind of thing. I'm starting to think it might be something very specialised. I think the vehicle might have been used at an airport once so maybe it could be some bit of unusual equipment. A pity, I was really hoping for some kind of extra fuel carrying bracket.

30cm tall and about 8cm across. It is mounted with the bottom hooks just above the rear cross member.

With a little bit of fabrication it would be possible to turn it into a jerry can holder. Would be just require a bracket making with a bar to hook into the bottom hooks and something at the top to allow the pin to secure it in place. That bracket could then be welded/bolted to a jerry can holder to make a quick release fuel can mount.
Although it is it only bolted to the body panels and not the rear cross member you would need to be careful with the amount of weight the bracket would handle.
