shame! i looked at a 54 plate disco, thought i would go for the youngest i could find, as you would and think less problems as younger!! eeerrr no! it was an eye opener, it was scabby as hell underneath, rear arch liners/metal bits had rotted through, tops of doors and the front bottom bar was nearly gone, i told the guy who was selling it as we were one of the first to look at it, told him best thing he could do was get himself some black waxoyl and get it done, then get rid quick, but not to me!! it must of been in the sea or stood around somewhere maybe before being regd! solihull salt heap!!

i had the same on my D2,but mine was from a coastal scottish area,tis now having another chassis fitted by jamesmartin.

Hello mate.
How are you coming along with the welding work?
That is the most rust I have ever seen on a D2 chassis. I'm surprised it could even hold itself up.

i wish i could show you the pictures of the old chassis on my D2,it was as rotten as rotten can be,a weetabix had more strength than mine.luckily it has had the replacement chassis fitted and it has been done properly.

I have done all the other work required for the MOT, but not had enough time to tackle the welding, don't know if I will have time over the summer. My other hobby when not tinkering with the Discoveries is boating and foolishly I put the boat on my mooring earlier this week, so I'm afraid that now takes priority whilst the sun is shining.
I did try to contact a mobile welder who advertises on Gumtree but no repsonse to any texts or messages. I did contact a guy who advertised the fact he was looking for a welder as he had got the same response from the Mobile guy.
If anyone on here is colse to Glasgow and wants a couple of days work, let me know, might even teach you to water-ski!

Quick update
Stripped out he Fuel tank and exhaust last week
Decided to go with a mobile welder who works for an MOT station.
Spent 4 days cleaning up and welding, result is chassis now all fix.
So today will be spent protecting the chassis
and then the rebuild
Hopefully with the MOT next week and happy times

It actually looks the dogs Bollox now its been welded and painted, should be good for another few miles once I get it all back together

Just played catch up with this post - the chassis looked suspiciously like mine did, until about 3 feet of steel sorted it. (I'll find the link to my thread) The major damage being in front of the area you can buy replacement rear quarter rails for!
I reckon the nearside goes first because, seeing as we drive on the left, that's the side that's closer to the gutter and all the crap etc.

Update -
Welding complete - forgot to take many photos in my haste to complete the project
Hers a few with some red oxide paint applied prior to hammeriting
Gave the rest of the Chassis a good going over with the hammer and was in good condition.
Treated it to 2 coats of red oxide and two coats of Hammerite.
Re fitted the fuel tank and exhaust, in readiness for its MOT.
To re cap this is what I did
Replaced Rotary coupler
Replaced Power steering box
New Discs and pads all round
Replaced rear Air bags and sensors
Replaced all bump stops
Replaced N/S/F Window regulator
Service and all filters
MOT this morning and passed with flying colours with no advisories.
First time I had driven it more than 100 yards was this morning and feels really good.
So now have two Discovery TD5's.
Think it might be time to find my next project.
