Hey if you were to move up here to within sight of the Scottish boarder you could buy a farm for the price of a 3 bed semi in Basingstoke!

That's basically the plan - pay off as much of the mortgage as we can over the next few years, then move somewhere more remote - whether that's north, west or east is yet to be decided, and largely depends on the availability of suitable work...

So I'm trying to figure out what to buy that'll be cheap to run, but still have enough space to lug stuff - which basically means an estate. I figure the cheaper I go, the sooner I can save up enough to get another Landy...
Currently it looks like a 2003-ish Volvo is the best bet, given that Ford diesels have a reputation for failing dual-mass flywheels, and VAG ones have the whole "dieselgate" thing...

If you are going for an old estate I've owned both the Volvo (740) and Merc (W124). They are both fantastic load luggers and really well built. The Volvo had a wider lower load space - could carry a 8x4 sheet, the Merc was higher and narrower - great for cookers and washmachines. The Merc had better handling, a fantastic engine and great self levelling suspension - impossible to overload (I tried) but the Volvo was simpler, Mercs are very complex, that said the Merc aircon was still going strong at 25 years. But if you want cheap go french, the big Pergeots are dirt cheap, if they break you throw them away, and the best load hauler of all is the old Citroen CX, you can get them for pennies (for now, valaues are rising) and they have full hydraulic suspension, used to be much loved by the house clearnce guys.

Thanks Rob. I like "simple" - a colleague of mine had a Merc estate and it was always going wrong and costing him a fortune to fix, due to the complexity...
