Hi guys

I replaced the gear oil in my 1988 90 2.5td ( 200tdi ) last month and the colour of the oil that came out was like a redy creamy colour like there was two different oil's in there so i replaced the oil with A.T.F. and ever since its been leaking from a few different places on the gearbox so was thinking of using EP90's gear oil, would this oil be ok for my gearbox ( L77 ) mainly just to help stop the leaks :)

too thick, you could always fix the leaks :)

Yes but its only been leaking since i changed the oil in the gearbox last month, i have since found out that M.T.F.94 is the oil i should have used as although A.T.F. was originally specified for my g/box the oil was superseaded with M.T.F.94 gear oil as its slightly thicker and doesn't leak like when filled with A.T.F. but as i have loads of E.P.90's in the garage i thought i would ask, can E.P.90's be used as a tempory fix till I get the right oil ? what do you think :)

afaik, atf is fine in lt77.

r380 is usually said to be mtf94, but atf is alright in there too.

jm always bangs the message atf or mtf94 doesn't matter, it's the frequency of change that's important.

mtf94 is pretty thin btw.

you'll destroy the box if you put ep90 in :)

there's not that many places for it to leak from, get cracking and sort it properly ;)

if you want to shorten life of baulk rings, atf is very detergent whatever you put in will leak now ,fix the leaks

Ok i may look into a re-con'd gearbox at a later date as its recently started to crunch when engaging 2nd gear obviously the 2nd gear sinchro has gone but its strange as other than the gearbox drain plug slightly leaking and since changing the oil in it last month with ATF its started to leak, would MTF94 oil be any better for now

wouldnt have thought so , if atf has flushed box so it leaks more new oil wont seal it , if its just developed a leak new oil wont seal it either

Ok i will check properly tomorrow where the leaks are coming from i know the gearbox drain plug is leaking which it did when i bought it in February this year and i have noticed the rear oil seal is leaking behind the handbrake back plate so i will check it tomorrow and see, but thinking back to when we drained the old oil out i don't think much came out so could answer why it wasn't leaking much before :(
