Hi gents

Still got me Disco and still got the same probs as in lack of power especially when towing me caravan.

I decided yesterday to follow some DIY advice from the forums and attempt to clean the MAP & MAF sensors. The May i thought was fairly easy - although there was oil on the sensor it was overly caked so to speak so i cleaned it up a treat and replaced. The MAF to be honest was in real good condition i thought, I disconnected the air intake pipe that the sensor sits on and had a look at the filament inside and it looked like new so i left it.

Gave her a test run and she the same.... Not sure what else i can do on a DIY basis other than to take her into a specialist or call one out.

What do you guys recomend in service - do i take her to a land rover dealer and service centre or call out a independent one. ?
 
You getting any black smoke?

I had problems with a rover and a vectra with their maf's, even cleaning them didn't help - it turned out they eventually give up and need to be replaced.

Get under the bonnet and rev/have someone rev the engine fairly hard a few times. watch the pipework from the turbo to the intercooler and from there to the inlet manifold, they should bulge slightly, if they dont, look for holes in these pipes or maybe they've popped off!

other than that, air filter? some places don't change them even if they say they have. fuel filter? air getting into fuel (metal pipes on sender unit rust and let air in), injector cleaner would also be worth a try.

Re the MAF, you can't tell by looking at it whether it is working correctly or not.

Start the engine, open the bonnet and once the motor is warmed through, disconnect the electrical plug to the MAF and listen carefully for what happens to the engine - are there any changes?

Anyway yeah i did all the above this morning and after the engine was warm i disconnected the MAF sensor and the engine just stayed the same, did not change revs etc, is this right ?

If i took it to me local Landrover dealer would they be able to tell me what wrong you think on the diognostics machine. (£40)

Welcome back AJ, hope you had good hols.

If I understand this correctly, when you disconnect the maf and there is no change it means the MAF is not working.

New MAF's available from Ebay at £30 !!!!
 
put up where you are and some one local with a nanocome may help and the way i was told was that if it drives the same with the maf conected or disconected
(would be happy to help if local to newark)

and i have never had mutch luck with cheap mafs

So if my engine seems in my opinion to run exactly the same if the Maf Sensor is disconnected or not then would this normally indicate a problem with the actual MAF sensor (IE: Faulty)

How do i actually clean the sensor then, i have cleaned the MAP sensor and that was straight forward, i can actually dismantle the MAF but not to sure on what part to clean - i can see the actual fillament. (do i clean inside etc, and what with ?)

I have also ordered a blanking kit of ebay ......

Any help with the above is so greatly received !!!!

you must not touch any of the parts inside the maf sensor the only way to clean it is to spray it with clutch and brake cleaner
and buy blanking kit i guess you mean for the EGR not the MAF
and if it runs the same conected or disconected then i normaly means its bu**erd

Hi Alan, the thin wire in the MAF is VERY delicate, so you can't really touch it with anything. The only thing to clean it is to use a spray like switch cleaner - carbon Tetrachloride - or similar. And don't get the jet too close to the filament - think spiders web !!:eek:
 
Defo worth cleaning the MAF as suggested with a spray cleaner. I used electrical contact cleaner from Maplins and a cotton bud. It made a big differance to my car. As an experiment, ages ago, before cleaning, I unlugged the MAF and the car didn't feel any different. I then thought mine must be working ok. I just cleaned it sometime after this, during a tinkering session and got a significant result.

Ref what has been stated about the filament. Go easy!!! The 2nd time I cleaned mine I was a bit over zealous with the cotton bud and broke the filament. It's so fine I didnt know it was there. Maybe a better idea to just clean with the spray and forget the cotton bud?

I then went and got a genuine LR (Siemens) one for £80, after this. Not sure about the quality of the cheap ones on Ebay. I didn't want to take the chance on such a key part.

The diagniostic can show the readings of the MAF against what is expected so you should know if yours is toast!

Another thing to check is a sticking wastegate lever on the turbo. This is really common and will hold her back.

ok guys - i have thoroughly cleaned both the MAP & MAF Sensors with electrical cleaner. I have also used WD40 on the wastegate arm.

I couldn't even move the wastegate arm at all so i sprayed it with WD40 and i think it perhaps moves a minute amount (perhaps a mm if that) - should it be able to move more freely than that with my own hands etc or does this sound normal ?

Gonna take it for a test drun now and whatever the outcome guys i really so mych appreciate all your help on this - i am usually crap at DIY - lol, but to be fair i have had a go !!!!

Will report back the verdict.....

Just got back and a very big improvement....

How can i tell if the wastegate arm is moving as it should be whilst i am driving... I can't move it with my hands with the bonnet up. It has been sprayed quite alot in WD40 - Any ideas ?
 
ok cool, i have also ordered me a blanking kit of ebay for the ECG Valve. Should i be able to fit this as a novice... hehe - is it complicate dor easy !

I thnk you probably mean your kit for blocking off the EGR valve?

Does your kit have just a blanking plate, or does it include a new 'trumpet' as well?

Ps After cleaning the sensors how is your Disco running now? Does it tickover smooth and reliably? Pull better, rev smoother?

How long should it take usually.... ?

Someone mentioned disconnect the servo in respect of the wastegate arm. Is that the silver cylinder thingy at the front of it, does it pop out easy etc...

1. If the bolts come undone ok, it'll take 10 mins tops.

To do the blanking plate only, you need to undo two bolts, slip the blanking plate in place and do up the bolts.

How hard can that be??

Go on, you'll be fine and your motor will love you for it.
