I have been offered a Freelander commercial x reg 1.8 petrol, 6 months MOT and running an LPG system, 140000 on the clock and no service history apart from knowing the belts have been changed recently. It has also been converted to 2 wheel drive. It drives well and the only faults I can find, the engine sounds tapperty. £500 ONO

What do you experienced landy owners think?

Buy and see, or not touch it with a barge pole?

Waste of cash, it will be fault, after fault, after fault, 2 WD should set off alarm bells.

run as fast as u can away from it

agree that it will be a money pit and total waste of time and money

too many red flags

Definitely stay away. I'm still a newbie to landys but I know to stay away from that!

You can get a working one with a lot less miles and seats in the back for not much more than that

the key issues are:

1) 2wd mode. many reasons are often given for this, usually "fuel economy". This is usually tosh, and the main reason for converting it to 2wd is that the VCU is goosed. Depending on how and what went on, this also has implications for damage to the IRD. The VCU is reasonably cheap to replace, but the IRD will be a weston.
2) 140000 miles with no service history ? as this vehicle has got older, chances are it's services will have been neglected, with no providence, there is a good chance it's a lemon. If oil changes are neglected, the oil galleries clog up reducing flow with resulting wear and damage
3) The lpg conversion rings alarm bells on the 1.8 k series engine. lpg conversions tend to run hotter anyway, couple this with potential overheating issues on the 1.8 k series and you could be in a world of hurt.

I'd pass on it

Thanks for the advice I will steer clear

I still want a freelander, plan B, I have £1500 to spend and I will try and find a decent TD4.......

WHY on EARTH would the nerve fire in your brain, inclining you to get a TWO WHEEL DRIVE LAND ROVER?
