Regarding LEZ

Ive got a 1996 defender and got round the lez by fitting rear windows, taking pics and sending them off, I think if your vehicle is pre 1998 you ahve a decent chance as you dont have to get the v5 change, after 1998 it seems you have zero chance as the DVLA wnt change it without proof from landrover that it is a genuine out of the factory station wagon

Nice piece of kit you've got yourself there do you really need to change the bulkhead it looks fine from the pics you've put up personally I'd put the gearbox in and enjoy it for a bit before giving it a facelift

After the snow I am even more keen to get my 90 on the road really wish it was sorted already.

So I am currently looking into workshops that can assist in getting the 90 back on the road, I am hoping to do a lot of work myself but also curious on how much I would cost for a professional to do the big bits like fitting bulkhead.

I have contacted a gearbox specialist and been quoted £395 plus vat to recon my box not including if lay/main shaft needs replacing, does this seem reasonable?

I have also contacted Kent 4x4 in biggin hill for a quote on gearbox and bulkhead fitting still awaiting for their response.
Has anyone used them?
My classic mini is now up for sale to fun this project and can't help feeling a little sad that it has to go especially as the little n large combo seems to look so good together.

Personally I woudnt put alot of money into it untill you know for sure it will be accepted as LEZ compliant.

It would be a shame to sell the mini, put in a huge amount doing up the landy and then have to sell it.

So zero work done so far but I have just been offered a 1990 ranger over gearbox in working condition for £50, I think it maybe a R38 but don't have serial numbers yet to check.
Either way would I think the gearbox will fit but may need to look at getting a shorter bell housing.

I have been looking at window kits for the rear to get the truck LEZ compliant however the truck Sides have the brace running horizontally, they are spot welded the whole width of the side rather than vertically, not sure if this is going to be an issue when cutting out.
Also would rather no pay almost £200 for a window kit but it seems even second hand sets go for this price! Might look and see if I can get a whole csw roof with sides and replace the whole lot in one and sell truck top off.
Will post some pics of inside if truck sides later and also some interior picks and scabby bulkhead pics.

So a New year has started and I am I further along with my project!
With our second child bambino due at the end of the month it's looking less likely that I'm going I have the time to do all the work on this myself.
So I am going to see if I can find a Defender specialist local to me in Orpington Kent that can get the old girl on the road.
Once it's moving I can start getting stuck into the smaller jobs when time permits.

Job one will be get gear box rebuilt/transfer box serviced fitted and get her roadworthy.

If anyone has any surgestions or know someone feel free to point me in their direction.
Biggest issue I have is because its not moving or raid worthy getting solid quotes seems a nightmare!

Ok so looks like I won't be able to get this LEZ compliant unless I ditch the diesel and drop in a V8. Had a good chat with DVLA/DfT and looks like the have clocked onto the windows in rear trick.
May have to sell this one and start afresh with a LEZ compliant defender.
Not happy but may be better in the long run.
