I want a perfect finish on the paint so I'm planning a full DIY respray. Ive only resprayed very few plastic body parts before so my experience is limited but im very patient and determined to do a good job. Could anyone give me some advice on how to treat the rust and actually doing the respray for a factory (or better) finish...

Opinions welcome on the photos.


Be very careful if you are using two pack paint and a spray gun. Two pack paint fumes are Very toxic and spray painting requires the use of an air fed mask. I would be tempted to do all the prep and hand over your pride and joy to an expert. This Will save you money and time in the long run. Good luck and post some photos when its finished.
 
Double yer price on fleabay by making it shiny. There's one born every minute!
 
get the fooker welded before wasting money on paint. Then when yu're reddy to paint it buy a roller & some exterior gloss or satin finish paint from B&Q.
 
yep i would have to agree, dont waste money on paint untill yer rust and other bits are sorted, otherwise you will be painting it again!

(my mate did a very cheap brush paint job on a nato landy, looks crap up close but you wouldn't tell from 10 metres - feckin perfect for laning)

Have to second the 2K paint advice, it is bloody nasty stuff, and the equpiment needed to make it safe is super expensive (I have looked at getting a set for a classic MG spray job)

I would also do the prepwork then get a pro to paint it - esp if you want better than factory finish - cause you aint gonna get that in ya garden!!!

I have not long completed my first respray, we did it using cellulose based paints as for starters my mums a health officer and has shown me what can happen when using 2pac incorrectly, some do it for years without issues where some people one harsh contact and you have health problems.

Get a half decent gun, top loader will do fine (what you get in most air compressor kits) but you want a bottom loaded (suction fed) gun for the top coats. also make sure its within the rating of your compressor.

Check your compressor, I used myn abit before spraying, always used in the garage. Anyway it was only after shooting the primer coat i though to drain the compressor tank, about a litre of water came out, thats not good, there should be none!!! there will be a small bolt or nipple, fill the tank halfway with air then slowly unscrew, hold onto it and do it slowly or as it will shout out and ya lost it.

Rubbing down is one of the most important bits, we didn’t go all the way down and the previous military style paint has affected it in some places, but then again abit of chequer plate sorts that out.

mostly things just need a wire brush then abit of thick painting done on them, a de-rusting wheel for a grinder = homebase about £8 is brilliant, i used about 3 of these over my whole chassis and other bits and did a bloody good job then just a brass brush to finish.

Its also the little things, get apack of bots and nuts at the next fair you goto and replace all external showing bolts.

When I finished it, it looked fab! I was totally proud and many people who have seen it say i have done a good job.

BUT

After only going out on a couple of tight lanes the scratches and marks are starting to come. I am abit of a cleaning freak and many people wonderd why i was spraying up a landy in the first place (my excuse was, ok, but then i will also have fun cleaning it after!) but anyway.... i applied loads of wax, top coat sealant and total protection layers (mixture of autoglass, megs and fattys) but things are still showing marks and isnt easy to buff out sometimes.

I am a noob in this area and have learnt allot from this forum, after already doing a rebuild and respray of what was in theory a perfectly good landy I would go with the rest of the people on here and say replace bits that need to be done then get on and use it. then maybe next years project respray it.

it’s is slightly annoying when laning and on 4x4 sites when i would love to go down a bomb whole or through abit o track but feel held back because i really don’t wana mess up the work i have put into my landy.

End of the day, its your choice, but take advice.
