I'm not a Disco techi like most on here but I had a similar problem a short while back. Check your auxilliary drive belt for tension and wear. I had three days of overheating....guage in the red very quickly but couldn't find the problem......did a high speed trip to the airport on one occasion and the aux. belt snapped and wrapped itself round everything doing 90 something.
It may help.
Riggy.

If it is "diesel knocking" when it heats up don't drive any more till you find out the problem and fix it. It is getting VERY hot ....

Sounds like it might be no coolant circulation.
Try belt bust, water pump failed (impeller dropped off), bir air-locks, system needs flushed to blast out gunge, that sort of thing.

Just because the header tank is filled does NOT mean the rest of it is filled or that the coolant is circulating.

have you put new thermostat in is the engine running ok have you checked timeing the rad is not plug with ****?

Hmmmm 5 miles to overheat, which coincidently is about the time the thermostat takes to open. I know you say stat is good, try starting from cold and leave running and see if a, heater is working which indicates water pump working and then b, keep your hand on the top hose as the thermostat opens it should become hot very quickly, then as the cold water exchanges back into the engine the stat will close for a short while. Check for the hoses getting hard indicating faulty rad cap (unlikely) of head gasket (more likely). But do all the cheap checks first. Take of the grill and feel if the rad is warm all over with no cold spots, the water comng out of the rad should be significantly cooler than the hot going in at the top hose.
