hi all,i have killed my disco auto 300 tdi,1996,HOW by a stupid
mistake(too much engine oil) when i realized i drained it,but as
i was moving it back about 20 yards the accelerator seemed to
stick & the engine was racing,even though i turned it off,now i
have got a bang, knock when engine running, suggestions as to
what it could be please, its in good nick so really dont want to scrap
it,regards stan.
ps; i am at bilton near harrogate if anyone wants to help, local people
i mean.thank you..

It sounds like the excess oil has pushed into the turbo and it ended up running on it's own oil. Did the engine come to a stop by itself? If it did then it probably ran out of oil and may potentially need a rebuild. At the very least your bearing shells sound like they might be knackered but the excessive heat and lack of oil could have done a lot more damage.

To be honest I would look around for a donor car and just swap the engines over. It would be far cheaper than a rebuild and it's not a difficult job. And you would still have the donor that you could break and scrap and get more than your money back.

In these old buckets an engine swap is pretty easy, it only takes a little time and patience. If you look at it logically it is possible even with the most basic of mechanical skills. Believe me, I ain't no mechanic but I have done an engine swap, head gasket, timing belt etc and it's not too hard.

And the best thing is that you can't really be much simpler than cars of this era. There are very little electrics to get involved in, it's all a nut and bolt job.

You will probably actually really enjoy it

Great excuse to do some other jobs whilst it's out also, the easiest being a monster of a steam clean!

I wish I had a reason to take mine out. Would love to give it all a damn good clean and paint. Put everything back in, nice and tidy... Rob style ;)

Oh and before we forget, you don't need a better excuse than that.

If you really want one, fit a new clutch with HD arm and release bearing.

so,i am first going to take the sump off & check the crank, conrods n shells,
if they all appear ok,do i start on the top bit, pistons push rods n all the rest
of the top end,one thing that puzzles me is why didnt the core plugs pop,i
thought they would be the first thing to blow out,i know a donor vehicle makes
sense BUT mines only done 110,000 miles,i know ive goosed it,but i dont want
to put a mucky old lump in it whats been round the clock,is my own engine
repairable or not if not i havent got a choice, regards stan.

Depends how deep your pockets are. I can prob be repaired but will be expensive.

If you get a donor you can see it running, know the mileage and will make most if not all of your money back breaking the rest of the donor car ( axles etc)

It may only be 110'000 but it's fubar'd now and likely will need a complete strip and rebuild.

If it was me and money no object I would get the car off the road, and get the original engine totally rebuilt by someone like turners. This will cost thousands tho.

You could get a donor disco with the same engine for. £500-800 I reckon. You could even buy a semi decent donor that's taxed and tested and in good mechanical nick and just break it and scrap it - don't have any qualms about breaking a decent disco they are easy to come ny

i agree flat, but my first job is to get a replacement 4x4 for carting
stuff to my caravan,so this will leave me pig lint,as to turners doing up the
engine i would sooner scrap it regarding cost of having it done,im just
an old sentimentel bugger at heart, its done me proud fort last 4 years,
& its as solid as a rock,BUT DONT MOVE,LOL
thanks for your input regards stan.

Change things like the clutch, timing belt and aux belts it will save a host of jobs later on that will be more difficult with the engine in situation.
