Hi Guys very new to this hoping i could get some help. I have a 1989 defender 110 it has been running well until recently . I can't engage gears anymore when the engine is running. any ideas what this could be ? thank you

Put into first, clutch in, pull the smaller gearstick (high/low lever) back and towards you ....

Did that work ?
If not, push the small stick away from you.
Let us know how you got on ...

Welcome to landyzone. When did you last having a full service.
What is the clutch pedal doing.
Are the gears noisy before recent failure and when you depressed the clutch pedal does this make noise go away.
When did the clutch plate get replaced.

Clutch not disengaging. If it was working when parked up check the fluid level in the clutch mastercylinder. Assuming there is sufficient fluid and the clutch pedal feels normal, your clutch plate may have stuck to your flywheel.
Try starting it in gear with the clutch depressed and the hand brake off, as it starts to move forwards stamp on the brake and is should free off.
Clearly this is not without its risks and you need to be prepared to switch off id it doesn't free off.

If the clutch has failed while the car has been in use, first check the fluid, but if that is OK, it is possible that the release arm has worn through and needs replacing.

i had a similar issue it was the release fork but not the usual pivot point but the two lugs that press on the thrust bearing had come off and was not allowing the clutch to fully release

As above
Check fluid level and check slave cylinder is working on gearbox
If that's all ok sounds like the clutch operating lever has worn through and not pushing on clutch
So in my opinion it's either needing fluid, a clutch slave cylinder or a gearbox out clutch fork
