Yes, increased pumping looses.Might actually increase fuel consumption because even though the revs are lower, the engine may be working harder to maintain speed.
Why do you think the current 1300rpm is high???? This makes no sense at all.I am sorry that I mentioned the fuel aspect, only to stop people saying that it was a waste of money. My main reason is to run the engine at a lower RPM on a long trip. Just to put a little bit less stress on a 23-year-old engine.
Errm, most people get a bit tetchy when they can support there arguments with experience. If we’re not careful this could end up like the “please ignore” thread in the freelander section
You must have the crappest V8 ever designed if cruising at 1500rpm is a concern!!!My aim was to reduce RPM during steady driving on motorways / highways on a long trip. The fuel saving and rusty diff change are only minor bonuses not my prime motivation.
I meant 1,500. That is not high. It is not low. It is what it is. But 1,100 is lower. That is a fact. Why do you think the current 1300rpm is high???? This makes no sense at all.
Leave thenI meant 1,500. That is not high. It is not low. It is what it is. But 1,100 is lower. That is a fact.
I have a 23 year-old engine in a car that has probably had a little maintenance in the 150k miles that it has done.
I will not spend the time explaining to you the 20 reasons why I think that.
I just prefer to put less stress on the 23 year old engine in my car on a long trip.
If I drove to Portugal and back staying in third gear on the highway for hours at a time that would be dumb as it would put more stress on the engine than necessary.
Likewise if there is an easy way to drive for multiple days at 1,100 RPM instead of 1,500 RPM that would put less stress on my engine.
There is a reason why Range Rover put a six speed gearbox in the next version of this car.
There is a reason why they put an eight speed gearbox in another version of this car.
Anything that runs an engine at a lower RPM for a long period of time is a benefit to that engine, it's not rocket science.
I came here looking for technical answers about how to do it, not looking for endless discussions about my reasons for doing it.
I have not heard anything that would change my mind other than the comment that the engine might run in a bad area of the torque curve, which seems unlikely given that it accelerates well from 1,000 RPM to 1,500 RPM during my normal driving.
Leave where? This forum? The place where I came to get answers about the ability to change over the differentials, which has not yet been answered?Leave then![]()
Knock yourself out, like I said, a lot of bods run these machines within their limits because they do what they do and people are happy.Leave where? This forum? The place where I came to get answers about the ability to change over the differentials, which has not yet been answered?
Are you the only person that can answer this question? Are they not other people that might see the question and answer it?
I don't really understand your comment.
I don't know what you are talking about. The L322 is one of the most modified Range Rovers available. People put manual gear boxes in them, coil over spring suspensions, raise them up, change the wheels, reprogram the engine computer, make the suspension manually adjustable, and many other things. I know all of that from this exact forum!Knock yourself out, like I said, a lot of bods run these within there limits because the machines do what they do and people are happy.
If they don't do what they want then buy something that does. Long gone are the days we're we can mod stuff.![]()
This means something. Once you realise the wait is over.I'm not going to just do it and see how it turns out, when I could just wait for someone with experience or knowledge to comment here.
Then get on with it and stop asking questions. Most of us have experience to back it up.I don't know what you are talking about. The L322 is one of the most modified Range Rovers available. I literally said in my opening comment for people to not suggest that I buy another car but here you are suggesting that. I have read these forums for a year and I have rarely commented here because I saw people arguing about nothing and not helping.
Sure there are people who come here with problems that they need solved to get their car back to original, but that is not the only purpose of these car forums. Why should it be? Why cannot people change their car?
For example there is a long article here about changing the thermostat in the V8 petrol to a lower temperature thermostat which makes a massive improvement to the engine.
That is one of the changes that I will be doing now that my new thermostat has arrived from Germany. It is a very simple yet enormously beneficial modification to the standard car.
My situation is not your situation, my needs are not your needs. Why should I buy another car, why should I leave this forum, because I am not you?
Powerful UK is a well know company that exists for the purpose of helping many people modifying Land Rover cars. If people do not modify cars how can they exist?
On another forum RRPhil gave me excellent information about my idea although he could not solve my issue about if the new differentials will fit or not.
But he didn't argue with me that I cannot do what I want to do. He understood why I want to do it and he gave me as much information as he could which I really appreciated.
If you can't modify your car then I feel sorry for you but that is your decision. I can modify my car and I have made several modifications already. Some of them improving features, some of them making it the way I want it.
Without the money to order a custom made car, an easy way for me to have the car that I want is to buy a cheap older car and make changes to it that are legal.
That is exactly why I bought this particular car, because I have mechanical knowledge, there is no car that gives me exactly what I want, and I am not afraid to change a car.
My 2002 petrol L322 with modifications gives me the car that I want to drive to Portugal and back, and there is no other car that does that. All I need to know is if the 2.76 diff can fit into my car and if there are some reasons that I did not think of why that would not work.
So far I do not have the answer to that simple question and I have not been told any reasons why it would not work if the diffs fit.
Hopefully somebody will have the answer to my question and will post it here or on the other forum where I asked the question.
Why would I go and buy two differentials that might not fit when I can just come here and ask a question that somebody might know the answer to? This has nothing to do with my gearbox, it has to do with my engine. I don't understand why you think this forum belongs to you and you can decide who can ask questions here and who must leave. Then get on with it and stop asking questions. Most of us have experience to back it up.
My 38' is programmed and puts out 170bhp since 2005 and keeps pushing. I know I can argue with the best about gearbox life and longevity. Go on, do you your stuff and you can be one who gets back their stuff. With real life shîte rather than some fücker else's shîte.![]()
The wait will be over when someone who knows if the 2.76 diff will fit into my 2002 Range Rover L322 or not answers the question. Or if someone knows of some other technical mechanical reason why that diff cannot go in my car. As opposed to telling me that I can't modify my car, that I am not allowed to be concerned about the RPM, that I must buy a different car, and that I must leave here for not accepting their non answer to my question. This means something. Once you realise the wait is over.
I dont think anything belongs to me, in fact we are just a meir passing in this time scape. Why would I go and buy two differentials that might not fit when I can just come here and ask a question that somebody might know the answer to? This has nothing to do with my gearbox, it has to do with my engine. I don't understand why you think this forum belongs to you and you can decide who can ask questions here and who must leave.
Basically I asked a question that you don't know the answer to and you have spent the whole day telling me what to do when you don't know the answer to my question.
And when you realize that you don't know the answer to my question you have told me that I need to leave here, because for some reason you think that no one else can answer my question other than you.
Your correct by all means, maybe nobody has changed diffs yet. Maybe they've not needed too but this is maybe your time to shine. The wait will be over when someone who knows if the 2.76 diff will fit into my 2002 Range Rover L322 or not answers the question. Or if someone knows of some other technical mechanical reason why that diff cannot go in my car. Why would I go and buy two differentials that might not fit (this was your suggestion)when I can just come here and ask a question that somebody might know the answer to? This has nothing to do with my gearbox, it has to do with my engine. (even though bmw obviously didn't think that through?) I don't understand why you think this forum belongs to you (and why would it) and you can decide who can ask questions here and who must leave.( not my decision)...
I have a 2002 4.4 Petrol L322 with front and rear diffs at the ratio 3.73, with the 5 speed ZF5HP gearbox.
My front and rear diffs are badly rusted on the outside but I do not believe that they need to be changed.
I plan to make a trip from England to Portugal and I was thinking to get two second hand diff that are in better condition, with the 2.76 ratio.
From looking at pictures of both types of diffs it seems that they have the exact same mounting points.
My reason for doing this would be to have a lower RPM when driving at 60 mph / 100 km/h on the trip.
Given that I could buy replacement diffs for around £100 each, I would most likely save the cost in reduced fuel consumption on the trip.
But my major concern is running the engine for a long time on a highway at a higher RPM than necessary.
I am not someone who needs or uses powerful acceleration, but I do prefer to run at a lower RPM on the highway.
If my current diffs were perfect then I would not consider this but as they are in bad shape on the outside it is something that I am considering.
I know that this would change the speedometer but I am not worried about that as I would use the GPS speedometer on my phone to mark the speed limits on my speedometer.
Please do not suggest that I sell my L322 and buy a supercharged version with the six speed gearbox because I have spent the past year fixing many issues on this car and I would not buy another car with unknown issues.
Is this a crazy idea or a good one?
The SC has an 8 speed gearbox.
I think the 2.76 diffs are from a diesel L322.
The oil was dark when I changed it but I have no reason to suspect that the internal diffs are not OK.
But on my latest MOT they noted the rust on the diffs as a potential future issue.
It's not just about the petrol saving, it's also about not running the engine at a higher RPM for such a long time.
It's just that the petrol saving would pay for it.
Changing the diff is a reasonably simple job.
I was really looking for someone who understood more about it from a technical point of view who might have some input.
