I went to drive off today, but found that my clutch was not engaging. I could move the gear stick into a gear but when i lift my foot off the clutch nothing happens.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do/check?

ok a defender-fluid loss -****ed slave or master cylinder

Ok thanks, i will check the fluid tomorow. and take it from there..... do you know how to check the clutch fluid?

Open bonnet. Unscrew top of reservoir. Look in. Fill up to 'full' level. Close bonnet.

Good point Davec...he may have knocked the diff lock into neutral...would explain how he can still select a gear.

Hang on - do you mean when you lift your foot up there's no drive? In which case there's no point looking at the fluid. Could be clutch slip caused by oil/fluid on the clutch plate or something broken in the gearbox. Which vehicle? On some gearboxes you can put the 2/4 wd lever into a neutral position.

Just what I was thinking! Obvious one is Transfer box knocked into neutral as suggested.
