Hi all, just sterted stripping an SD1 v8 I picked up dirt cheap. its for a project motor and I only really want the heads.

I noticed once I had spent too long taking off the efi inlet fanimould there was quite a bulge in the vally cover.

I am guessing this means the heagaskets gone???

Doesnt really matter, I like I said I only wanted it for some bits but out of interest would it have to have been a catastrophic steam cloud at the side of the road failure for that to bulge or more like 3 years of using coolant?

many thanks :)

there might have been some very old dried out custard in the oil filler cap hard to tell as its been sat for years The flame trap was so buggered I had to put a screw driver through it to get it off and it left a pile of ****e in the hole lol. thats as far as I got this afternoon :p

do you know anywhere local with a wet blaster ,glass beads or similar brings the ali up like new without etching, are you reboring block

lol, I would have jetwashed the bastid off before removing the fanimould but I got all jacked up to do it and my jetwash is broken

I am not sure I will be using that block, I have another special one coming in from afar but it may be shagged- bit of a gamble. If I do use this one I hope to not need to re-bore just hone but we shall see when I take off the heads which is a fair way off.

I just stripped the fanimould to sell it and take some load of the engine stand which was looking a bit bent lol

tipping heads-that is why row of head bolts removed on later engines.

from memory 25nm and threadlock recommended- fills the hole and about it

im not so sure it was much of an issue ,not unusual for head gasket to leak after 10 years or more ,though i dont fit outer bolts whether using stretch or std bolts

I'm about to strip the 3.9 from my 80 inch tomorrow I got the engine out today but didn't take thwe clutch off to check the flywheel.

Did you still want this RRC Flywheel? I'm not too fussed if not no worries. Its possible the one on the 80 inch is an SD1 and if it turns out to be a std unit I'll put one of them on the milling machine tomorrow see how many Kg's I can lose from it before fitting to the rebuilt and about to be stripped inspected and rebuilt again SD1 motor. Lucky for me this 80 has a nice low profile remote oil filter housing so no worries about clubbing the oil filter off road.

yes I do still want to swap but I still havnt check if mine is a match for the rrc clutch-which i doubt it is cos its from an sd1 lol.

I might be able to look tonight or tomrrow, wha are you going to start?
