Hi I am hoping some one can help me get home for Xmas. My 1999 4.6 HSE petrol automatic is giving me a hard time.

When I start it from cold it starts straight away. Then when I give it some revs it revs up then dies off and cuts out. It then starts up ok again and if I give it a couple of minutes and rev it its ok. It does not cut out. Then when I am driving away it splutters a bit and then when I get to about 50mph it backfires:fighting: and surges. Once it’s going and there is no backfiring it goes and then pulls back and keeps on doing this. I have just had all new bosh plugs put in and they tell me they have checked the ht leads. The engine has had a service done filters, oil change, antifreeze etc all done.

I was hoping to drive home through Europe to UK which would be about 2000 miles.

was it fine before the service and plug change, check for loose connections at the top of the engine, sounds like it could be throttle position sensor/idle sensor

thanks for that but i dont know any thing about mechanics. what is a idle sensor is elctronic and what position should the throttle be in please

check the ht leads, they're prone for arcing out on the rocker covers. run the engine in the dark and you'll see sparks jumping from the leads to the covers. If in doubt just change them

as he said, sometimes ht leads breakdown under load and cause similar symptoms, it happened on a escort of mine!!!

hi just done 2000 mile trip in range rover 4.6 run ok at 75mph but on a up hill could only get 50mph when i put foot down it would splutter or when i try to over take it pulls back and splutters. had all leads and plugs checked all ok. eightinavee you say air flow meter if it is would i need to change all of it?

a/f meter is one unit and i think you would have to change the unit but not the whole air intake.

ideally you need to get it on a testbook machine or similar. where abouts are you now, maybe someone can suggest a local specialist who wont charge the earth to help you out. to get it diagnosed you should be looking around £30-£50.
