my late 300 tdi auto has started to struggle when pulling away it starts ok and runs and drives well with no problems, i do get the check light on now and again, i have look on here and there are similar problems but not the same any ideas please

When you say pulling away I suppose you mean harder acceleration than normal running.
Just a thought but my first checks on an old motor with a turbo would be the pipes feeding it and the intercooler.
if they are weak in any way then they can collapse a little and cause a lack of air flow and low power.
I had the 200 but they are both fairly bullet proof engines so I cant see anything major with the engine if serviced properly.
 
Change the fuel filter & clean/replace the water trap/sedimentor located on the osr rear chassis leg. Lift pumps are also common for failing. Cheap fixes to start with. :)
