Does anyone know how to stop the stereo muting? I've pulled it out only to discover that there is no wire attached to the telephone pin. I'm at a loss. Could it be the remote buttons sending a wrong signal?

It ramdomly decides to mute when ever it feels like it. It also un-mutes (if there is such a word) when ever, which can make you jump. I should of said, it is the harmon kardon unit in a disco 2.

So not associated with going over any bumps, or indicating or pressing horn, turning leftetc etc etc,

gonna make it difficult to isolate the problem if it is truely 'random'.

whats a stereo mute button?

Press 1 button to mute sound - saves turning volume knob which can be very tiring at times :D
Also auto-mutes when wired into mobiles / carphone kits when they ring.

omg. what next? summat to wipe your arse/nose/eyes?
glad ive got the poverty model then. less to go wrong/fall off etc...

It has muted with the engine off, no one in the car, all the doors closed, etc!!!
I have read somewhere that it could be the switches on the steering wheel being dirty. I don't want to take them appart cos of the airbag.

obviously there is no mute button on the steering wheel controls, and they are wired into the stereo sockets directly, however according to the wiring diagram for hardon systm the 2 wires that come from the steering wheel controls to the head unit are gray with red trace and green with black trace, so you should be able to isolate those from the head unit connector without losing anything but the remote controls too see if that stops the problem or not.

if a tree falls in the forest and no-one is there ,does it still make a noise? engine off,car empty, doors shut, etc..why have the radio on??

are you sure it is not linked directly to the ignition as if you have the engine off then there wil be no powere to the stereo so no sound, could be mistaken for muted.

There is not a Bluetooth hands free kit in there is there, this can be hidden and mute the stereo?

Thanks l3on
I followed the wires to a connector under the steering wheel (figured there must be one). since I disconected it, The stereo works fine. Now all i have to do is figure out how to take the steering wheel buttons apart without firing the airbag off.

You could try bleeping through the pins to see if any are shorting or rather beeing connected to the switch, may give you some clues.

by dismantling the steering wheel you will not set off the airbag. the airbag system works when the detonator is jolted sharply not when the actual bag is prodded or poked.

Just don't accidentally short any wires whilst doing it!

if you want to remove an airbag what ya gotta do is this. disconnect the battery then go and have a cup of coffee and a sticky bun.(20 -30 mins) this gives the capacitor that operates the airbag time to discharge its self. then when you go back to it there is no electrickery to set it off.so you have no fear of it going orf.

After saying the stereo works fine, it muted!!! I then cut the remote wires behind the connector on the stereo. It worked fine. So I told my other half I had fixed it (sort off). It then muted!!! I think a new stereo is called for.
