Hi all
Am new here and also to landrovers need a discovery to tow horse
[ wifes half ton pet ]. Have been told by a friend that the best suited in both price power and MPG would be a 2.5 diesel TD4 ?
Understand the diesel bit [ not all Brummies are thick] but how do i tell if its a Td4 ? all the bages seem to say TD5 etc but have not seen one with TD4 My not be looking in the righ place any help would be greatfully recived. Mind you my mates a bit of P### Taker so could be being well set up here

TD4 is a Freelander engine, so yes your mate is taking the P. What's your budget?
 
If you are looking for a Discovery diesel, it will be either a 300Tdi which is a Series 1 or if it is a Series 2 it will be a Td5.........The Td4 is a 2000cc 4 pot turbo diesel engine fitted to the FREELANDER not the DISCOVERY....If you had a Td4 fitted in a Discovery it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding never mind go over a speed bump lol

Thanks for the imput So my Mates a **** " nothing new there then" as for budget. as cheep as chips just cost me £1200 for a bloody saddle. Still have to take a deep dreath when i think about what the " 500kg pet " cost. LOL

Well then you're option's are either a 200TDi or a 300TDi. Both, if you look hard enough are going for less than a grand, engine's are pretty robust if regularly serviced, biggest issue will be rust. Have a search as there is load's of buying info on here.

May Seam a dum question but does the 200 / 300 Tdi equate to engine size ? i.e 2ltr- 3ltr
Rust not too much off a problem as I have workshop and decent mig. Any ideas about fuel consumption ?

Hi John, just to be clear, rust is a big problem on these early Disco's - do not underestimate this issue.

Lots of otherwise excellent Discos have failed mot's and gone to the big parking place in the sky as a result of rust alone.

Look at:

Rear body crossmember and body supports;
Rear chassis;
Boot floor and it's crossmembers;
Rear outer and inner wheel arches especially around the seatbelt mounts;
Inner and outer sills;
Body mounts;
Inner front wings.

If you have the ability to repair these, all well and good but the repair panels will still cost a chunk. I believe a replacement rear body crossmember is about £130+vat on it's own.

For you own sake, do not underestimate the rust issue.

I will keep this in mind while i am looking around. Had a same problem with the Vitara
we have for a socond motor spent weeks on my back burning holes in myself putting it right. Its just a shame the vit has not got the guts to tow a horsebox and the "pet"
Mind you am not over keen on motors that dont brakedown LoL

Both 2.5 tdis, 300 being the latter and better version, around 28mph.

Dont be tempted to buy a cheap rusty one, as has been said before, it may not be economical, or possible to repair some. I spent a lot on my 300 tdi, but it was very low mileage and relatively rust free with new tyres and a nice interior ( working air con was a bonus)
I get around 30 mpg regularly with mine, last week, i travelled a bit further afield and got about 35mpg.

Watch out for heavy clunks when pulling away and changing gear. It may not be an issue to some, but it can be annoying after a while, especially towing / sitting in a queue of slow moving traffic etc. I sold my last one because it was a pain to drive smoothly ( and it was a rust bucket) .

Hi John, we tow the same sort of "pets" as well. I've towed with manual and autobox TDi 300's and they do tow well and each has it's merits however on balance I've gone for auto as in slow-moving traffic situations I find them preferable.

Another however, IF you can possibly manage to stretch to a Disco II TD5 you will find pretty-much all the rust on the body issues will have disappeared. You may well find rust on the chassis, but it's usually the kind dealt with by flapwheel and Hammerite, rather than welding. Also on DII the autobox has torque converter (TC) lockup on top and third which is a real boon for towing. They are also a much nicer road car in general - but to get anything decent you need to have £3000+.

You haven't actually stated a budget but by the looks of the saddle cost, there's not a huge amount left in the kitty. You sound like you know your way around motors so I reckon you could get a perfectly serviceable TDi 300 for about £1500-ish. You will need to be prepared to travel though as good value ones are few and far between.


Incidently, relating to your last comment, if properly looked after and serviced, you will be bored by their relative reliability :D:D:D

As has been said by a lot of you that cheep is expencive in the end and yes there is not a lot left in the treasure chest at the monent. I was at first thinking along the lines of about £1500 but have decided to put the "vit" on Fleabay next week to up The Pet Mobility Fund.
The main reason I want to go for an older on is that being a Bady Boomer I cut my teeth on Minis, Imps, Morris minors etc if you could not fix then you did not get home.
all the new stuff is like the starship enterprise to me.
Erg valves, air flow wijjits, cats, coils where there used to be spark plug caps. Tried to take one of to see which plug was duff with the motor runnig on our Magane.Bad move looked like I had A footballers perm for week after that.
Will keep my eyes open and keep reading all the good advice I keep reciving thanks to you all you are such a friendly bunch
