ok, ive not owned a landy for about 3 years, and week and a half ago i got a freelander TD4 Es 52' plate with 112k on the clock.
beautiful motor, very tidy inside and out.
anyway, ive done the first tank, well 3/4s anyway, turns out its doing about 27.92 mpg, is this to be expected?

it doesnt appear to have had the EGR valve mod done, which ill do once the warranty is up, which im guessing may give it a slight improvement.
also going to do the BMW breather mod.
anything else people can suggest ( other than stopping my wife driving it with her heavy right foot).

:)

My wife's completely standard 2006 TD4 5-door manual was returning 36.1MPG but I checked again today and it has dipped to 32.5MPG while covering the same journies as before. I can't even say that the drop is due to defrosting on cold winter mornings as we haven't had any frost to speak of since the new year.
Am keeping an eye on it as the consumption is almost level with my Defender now.

My TD4 (2003) tends to get around 8 l/100km which is about 35/36MPG when driven normally. With a heavier foot, especially on European motorways, its more 10 l/100km or marginally more.

Thats low for a TD4 I would say. I have not properly calculated the mpg on ours but roughly its 36mpg min.
My recently acquired 1.8 petrol is getting 31mpg (accurate calc) with 113k on the clock (although it did get a new engine at 70k)

My 1.8 does a regular 30mpg, have only just bought a TD4 as well, so interested what it will do (will be gutted if it is worse than the petrol)

Well I'm not certain of how to work it out properly, but mine has just done, from a brimmed tank, 389 miles. I went to the same pump used to brim it, and brimmed it again, managed to fit in 53 litres.
That's mostly motorway miles, I would say a good 220-230 motorway miles.

I think it's 33.4 miles per gallon. If I'm wrong can someone please correct me.

thats what i worked it out to be.

so im gonna get it serviced, new cambelt etc

then egr by pass

anything else i should look at doing.

mind, i think it doesnt help she has gone from golf gti to this

Dont brim it, go to first click off of pump. Brimming can differ by a good litre or so

Full tank for my TD4 auto is giving me around 32mpg or 400 ish miles. My old Disco did similar....

Running a td4 2002 model 5door manual. Avg is 37.1 according to a.car software on the android phone. Best was 42mpg on a tank.

The avg was calculated out over 6months.

Only mods are egr cleaned out, vacuum hose removed, upgraded oil breather fitted.

114k miles on the clock.

Now also running a grand Cherokee 2.7crd and it's getting around 26-30 :(

Think I may go back to the freelander :)

My drive to work is 12 miles each way, some 30, some 40mph bits, a couple of longish 25-30mph climbs in 3rd, some queing and stop start stretches, some idling at lights etc. Average speed for the journey varies between 20 to 25mph, i.e 30-40 mins. MPG averaged for the last 3 months 29. I used to have a 300TDi Disco, also auto, which I admit was driven shall we say, steadily! It averaged 24mpg on the same journey. I havnt had chance yet to do a test over a long continuous run, with motorway cruising etc. On 1200 mile tours to Scotland, never exeeding 65mph the ol Disco used to manage a respectable 34 mpg for the tour, with some very mixed driving including long motorway sections on one hand and single track twisty hilly roads on the other.
Freelander is going to Jura this year so that should test it!

I got a 54 plate TD4 auto with 58k on the clock and I'm getting around 31/33 mpg and thats mainly country lanes. Only mod Ive done is adding a tuning chip thats set to halfway. Haven't done a long run yet so cannot comment on motorway mpg.

wonder why mines so bad then? you have roughly the same as me.

Try the egr valve clean out (I've put the original back in as opposed to buying the upgraded one) and change the oil pressure filter In front of the air filter (think that's the right name but no doubt someone else can confirm this).

I also run an injector cleaner though it every so often. I know some reckon it's just snake oil and doesn't work but anytime I use it I definitely find that the mpg increases slightly (it does drop of again when not using but I reckon every so often is helping). I tend to always buy whatever fuel is the cheapest locally and suprisinly also found that the three times I managed to get 42 I'd filled up at asda which was the cheapest.

Also, if you have an android phone get "A-Car" software. It's a great way to monitor the ongoing fuel economy and from differing garages. If using I phone try "Vehical", it's quite good but as yet I've found nothing in the app store as good at tracking vehicle expences as the Android Market (if anyone else has I'd love to know though)

Bar that I just try to keep in as high a gear as possible and changes up thorough the gears at 2000rpm and below for normal driving where possible.

If yours is an auto it will also be harder on fuel.

Air con running will also reduce the mpg.

I'm getting around 30 mixed town but mainly motorway. 26 local.

Seems to be smoking a bit when cold - so might need a good service, erg clean out and crank case breather changing.
