I have just got a 4.0 ES (2000 xreg) and i am getting about 180 miles to £30 of LPG (60 litres) which i calculate to be about 13mpg.
can i ask what do the 2.5 diesel engine gets in terms on mpg? im jsut wondering if i went for the wrong engine ??
Hi there, it depends on which diesel and which gearbox, here are a few examples of
actual, real mpg figures:
'93 Disco TDi 200 manual - daily 36mpg - on a run 40+ - best ever 47!!!
'98 Disco TDi 300 manual - daily 35mpg - on a run 38+
'98 Disco TDi 300 auto - daily 32mpg - on a run 37+
'99 Disco TD5 auto - daily 28 - on a run don't know !! This vehicle has not been in my possesion long enough to give accurate figures.
To your more general point about V8+LPG versus Diesel. Even though I love the sound of a V8 I just can't get past the enormous thirst of the beasts. I've had several V8-engined cars and none of them were as slurpy (new word !!) as the LR ones - they just don't make sense at all to me.
I don't like all the electrics on their engines, way too complicated and DON'T deliver the advantage of more efficient running that they should.
For example, I had until recently a BMW 740i with a 4ltr v8 in it. This would do, for my work, about 25mpg !!! She weighed nearly 2tons, so roughly comparable with the weight of a Disco and yet she delivered about 60% better mpg.
For me, for a number of reasons, it's got to be diesel every time.
Much less complicated engines (up to the end of the TDi's at least) can be almost as gutsy with very few, cheap mods, but deliver reliability and mpg that the V8 boys can only dream of.
There you have it, my tuppen'th
Cheers
Dave
