Hi guys,
My 2003 TD4 is running super sweet, no problems so i decided to do an mpg test over a few hundred miles.:
32.71111111 mpg
35.11450382 mpg
35.26666667 mpg
36.29241379 mpg

I have new DPH silicon turbo hoses, egr bypass, BMW cyclone breather, use 50ml of Millers per tank load, new tyres, new diff and vcu, new brake drums and brakes (not getting hot)....
Maybe I should have a lighter right foot.... :cool:

Those figures are not too bad if it was 'mixed' running - towns, traffic-lights, twisty country roads etc.

The only way to get 'amazing' results is to jump on a motorway for a couple of hundred miles with the cruise-control set at around 65mph - that can give well over 40mpg easily.

I get local mpg 30, motorway 31 (if I stuck to 70 pretty sure it would be better) just hate being overtaken (one day I may grow up :) )

I have never tested the fuel consumption on our TD4, planning to do it next month just out of interest, going to use it for work over a week, my 1.8 gets 31 mpg over that route so will be interesting to see how the TD4 does in comparison - I am hoping for high 30's :)

Don't think that's too bad. I get 36 - 38mpg these days, predominantly on short journeys. I'm running with the EGR blanked off, 50ml of Millers per tank and a new injector that has now settled down after a big drop in MPG following its replacement a few weeks ago.

I concur with Singvogel - the times I've done many miles on a motorway I can get about 42mpg.

I get an average of 28mpg - mostly around town. Best was 35mpg which was a motorway run. Mostly I'm getting 24-28mpg.

This was calculated over about 1500 miles.

Getting 35 at the mo but very light on the heavy pedal.De- EGR'd BMW Crank Case Mod, shot of two stroke with every tank.

Well just ordered a Synergy with MAF and switch so will be looking for mind blowing improvements :) My next journey (after fitting) will be to my local Marks and Spencer (8 miles) so will be hoping for a vast improvement. To be honest I've only bought it so I can play with the BIG BOYS and be a member of the Synergy club :) Got a few long journeys later in the year (gatwick and warwick) so will see how it performs but I expect it to pay for itself after my first long trip (joking)

from first fill up ( bought '06 td4 on Feb 1st .. 37252 milage .. manual gearbox )

without engine mods ( 'xcept 'zx1' in the engine oil ) .. around town plus some country A 'n B roads .. and about 30 miles of M way
no right foot restrictions ..

33 mpg

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
fitted an egr bypass .. silicone hoses ..
restricted myself to gear-up changes at low ( 2k ) rpm ..
( primarily to avoid any shocks to the drive-train .. )
have been using 'diesel-aid' in the fuel .. ( tried 'n tested previously )
same driving environment as before ..
39 mpg
~~~~~~~~

yesterday installed a synergy .. currently set on '2'
had pedal-to-the-metal fun on a test run day ( set on '3' )
now aim to return and keep to low-rev mode 'n see how the mpg runs ..'till next fill up

~~~~~~~~~
btw: above mpg calculations whereas : 4.54 ltr = 1 gallon ( imperial )
My mpg is rising again now that winter is over
I was getting about 30 over the winter months, now picking back upto 35/36.
I can get 44 during the summer with mixed driving.
Although my fbh is still kicking in.
I think one of the reasons for my poor fuel consumption is due to the aircon always being used, without it in the winter the windows mist up and during the summer (hopefully) it's too hot (no FBH fitted to my model)
done a bit of a test on mine 264 miles from full tank filled up again it took 5.5 gallons = 48 mpg ? on A roads it's done over 100.000 Td4
recent brim-to-brim fill up @ 360m .. of which :
50m .. estimated 'M' way
310m .. round town / country A roads
42 mpg
~~~~
synergy.2a constantly 'on' .. setting 4

I'm getting around 34/35 mpg most of which is town driving with a bit of dual carriage,
got egr blanked of synergy set on 4 and filled up yesterday and added 2stroke for the first time, just wish i could learn not to use the extra power.......

.. and added 2stroke

i'm using this .. 1ml for 1 ltr of fuel ..

Diesel Fuel Additive | Diesel Aid - United Diesel, Shropshire

main reason is that i used it when running hgv's in the late 70's ..
ran coast-to-coast usa .. all weathers ..
i.e. couldn't risk problems caused by moisture in the fuel .. especially in winter :)

the stuff kills diesel-bug as well

http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/tips_docs/Problems with fuel.pdf

although unlikely to be a problem if the service station staff look after the storage tanks

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm getting around 34/35 mpg most of which is town driving with a bit of dual carriage,
i did one experiment .. synergy set on 2 .. town driving with a bits of dual carriage .. country A and B roads
no right foot discipline .. used the available power at most opportunities .. especially charging up hills :) ..
result was 34 mpg ..
i don't think there's great advantage to using a heavy right foot these days ..
best off making use of the td4's low rev torque ..
'n saving what power it has for quick ' safe overtaking .. if needed ..
( .. and giving the engine a bit of a workout now and again .. to keep it healthy :)))
very little short or in-town-only driving
mostly country 'A'roads .. some 'B' roads .. some motorways ..
I test ours irregularly. Lowest we've seen is 32 and thee highest we've had is 43.
To all those saying run low revs - does the td4 not have a variable vane turbo? If so, do you not need to engage the turbo from time to time to ensure the vanes don't sieze or stick?
Yes it does have variable vanes, but the driver control over it is not such that we can decide when it operates or not.
I don't think I could prevent it doing it's job.
Even to overtake a kid on a bicycle would involve some turbo assisted acceleration.
I can sense/feel/hear the turbo spin up from around 1200rpm so never a journey passes without it in use.
My idea of running at 'low' revs is not to exceed around 2500 to 2750 when accelerating. But if needs must for safety e.g. to get past a truck or tractor in the minimum time so as to be exposed to 'danger' for the minimum period, I might rev a bit more.
Of course with the auto I have 'kick-down' which I have never used and would deem only necessary in an emergency.
Singvogel.
One of the reasons I get higher fuel consumption is my love of the kick down, coupled with the Synergy's increased power it certainly helps with Motorway driving.
