laugh all you want but any motor petrol or diesel will use more fuel when driving up hill or towing with a full tank its common sence,

maybe it would make a big difference in a ****ing prius where weight and aerodynamics are taken into account when designed but in a landy you have the aerodynamics of a brick on a skateboard and with the weight of a small wagon so an extra couple of pounds isnt going to make much difference. except the inconvenience of having to stop to refuel while losing the continuous momentum on a long run that helps the fuel economy of any motor (any stopping/starting/changes in speed affects mpg).

as for carrying fuel, dont know about doozil but petrol goes off after time and wouldnt want to put an old can of petrol in a car as it has a tendency to gum injectors/carbs (did this once in a bike and never again) and then there is the safety and possible spillage aspects to think about.

It has been said before but if you care that much about fuel economy YOUR DRIVING THE WRONG VEHICLE :welcome2:

why not suggest driving naked, shaving your hair, removing all unnecessary seats to save weight and improve mpg too?
 
a tank full of fuel weighs about the same as an extra passenger. simple maths would suggest that saving 5% of total vehicle weight may well save 5% on fuel, but in practice, I dont think it saves anything like that amount. When I am towing horses and caravans, fuel economy seems pretty much the same. Mind you, I dont go that fast then.. Once you have that weight moving, cruising economy will hardly be affected by weight that is hidden with the vehicle and not affecting aerodynamics.

Id love to fill my tank all the way up, but I dont like leaving a few litres on the forecourt as I drive away owing to the leaks..:doh:
 
Filled my TD5 Auto up last week, £100 for approx 80+ litres. I re-set the milometer at that time.
Fuel warning light came on this week and I had covered 460 Miles. I'd have said 90% of that millage was on the motorway and under 70mph.

I wouldn't say that was all that good... I've done over 550 miles on a full tank in Ruby (mostly 70mph) and she's an old 200TDi (auto).

maybe your fuel light comes on a little early... did you fill up again after to get a true fuel useage?
 
The only way to do it is to check over a period using a spreadsheet like the attached. Everything except date, mileometer, cost and litres is calculated from these items.

running a full tank makes little difference to economy... but refilling at half full means ive always got a couple of hundred miles if the tankers go on strike again, or we get ice and snow so the petrol stations run out..or ive got to get aged parent to hospital at 3am .or whatever..... it just makes life simpler
