I used to get around 30 mpg from my 90 300tdi. Insurance was always high, but I found Land Rover insurance to be very good for me. That said, I was 20 with two years no claims when I got my first. I think I paid around £800 fully comp with legal cover and the recovery package.
The N/A doesn't have a turbo, and on the road it's slow! It will be cheaper mind, and for off road use it's just as good as the tdi really.
If you can afford it get a tdi, they're nicer to drive. If not a N/A diesel is better than no landy at all!
