Land rover series 3 88 1982 Petrol

After spending £700 getting engine rebuilt I took it in for Mot , Failed on below

Service brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)
Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)
front Brakes imbalanced across an axle (3.7.B.5b)
rear Brakes imbalanced across an axle Axle 2 (3.7.B.5b)
front Service brake application uneven across the axle (3.7.D.2b)
rear Service brake application uneven across the axle (3.7.D.2b)
nearside rear brake drum contaminated by oil (3.5.1h)
nearside front Suspension spring mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (2.4.A.3)
offside front Suspension spring mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (2.4.A.3)
offside rear Suspension spring mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (2.4.A.3)
nearside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded floor (2.4.A.3)
offside front Headlamp aim too high (1.8)
nearside front Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f)
offside front Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f)

Ive been quoted £300 thats with VAT , seems good , im not in a position to do work myself at moment and its been off road since November! , I have purchased a hub rebuild kit for MOT centre as they said it may be hard to get ,I didnt just get plastic black seal I purchased the whole rebuild kit with gaskets and bearings £10 im assuming Ive got the right thing? any thoughts on price? As i say seems ok to me
 
If all the brakes are imbalances I'd say it's spending 10-15 minutes just playing with the adjusters after checking the wheel cylinders haven't partially seized.

If the hub rebuild comes in a blue britpart bag don't fit it. The bearing won't last and you'll be doing it again with the right parts in a couple of months.

The track rod and headlight is about 40 minutes work for one person to do both depending on how rusted in the track rod is.

Seems odd that every spring hanger has been deemed excessive yet the rest of the chassis is fine the spring hangers don't tend to rust and rot that badly and the other parts of the chassis would.

I must ask why spend £700 getting an engine rebuilt but not spend anytime looking into chassis or brakes? It may be a different mind set as I work on all my vehicles check everything and prioritise things but I wouldn't fix up and engine if I couldn't stop the thing because the brakes were goosed.
Unless you were using the MOT as a check to see what needed fixing to get it on the asap. But I normally take mine with the chance of a pass being inevitable.
 
I know ive done it all wrong way round , last time it had Mot it failed on tyres only which I replaced , brakes seemed ok , corrosion only appeared after a few taps with hammer so it wasnt obvious , im assuming £300 isnt too bad then
Ive replaced all wheel cylinders myself recently for mot , so brakes poss just adjusters as shoes were new.

If you'd read this post you'd know that Neil was prepping for his MOT when the engine died, hence engine repair was the priority BEFORE he could get it to a test............................... Had you have read his post you'd know that he has no facilities or space to work on his landy himself - we don't all have farms...................
And had you read his previous posts he's perfectly honest about his skill/knowledge level so is in the sad position of HAVING to use garages...............................
 
At present Neil the priority is just get the MOT and start using your landy again, as you know they are constant work anyway but you need your ticket so £300.00 = PASS= Job done, seems reasonable to me. True, a lot of the small bits you could do yourself - but I doubt that'd bring their price down by much - this way it's all done and you're back on the road sooner - as always good luck
 
The other thing ive got to do is replace heater control valve , any advice on loosening it up it almost looksd welded on!

No where does it say prepping for an mot when the engine died. I don't read every post prior to the one I've replied on.

I wasn't having a go on how it was done, if you read my post properly before getting your knickers in a twist I stated that it seemed a little backwards not that it was wrong. I made no judgement on his ability or skill level I asked why spend £700 on an engine rebuild if the brakes aren't working properly. Which is a fair question and the answer given was fair. I was only giving a brief run down on the possible faults which may save the garage time and thus him money. As for all the spring hangers being corroded excessively I brought up it seems odd that all are excessively corroded but no other chassis component because they don't normally corrode whilst the rest of the chassis stays fine it just sounded like the garage may have been trying to create more work to get more money.

Unfortunately stuff said on the Internet can be interpreted differently to how it was originally meant. I wasn't being patronising or talking down just giving a friendly opinion, we are allowed to ask why things like the engine was rebuilt aren't we?
 
Sounds a bit funny to me.
If the spring mountings are corroded beyond a rub down and underseal how the effin jeff do you replace all of them for that kind of money.
Don't get me wrong it sounds like a bargain but a bit too much of a bargain for me.
Is the work being offered by the MOT station?
 
Work is being offered by MOT station , but station was recommended by family , I was with tester when he tested it and whilst it was up on the ramps he showed me welding that needs doing so its all legit. £300 does include all the work but I think brakes just need adjusting (shoes and cylinders are new ), headlamp adjusting is easy , so the only parts are track rod endings and hub deal , and im providing hub seal myself. I could do with a break , ive already spent £700 that I didnt have on Landy.
 
My thoughts exactly. You've effectively added £1000 to the resale value too because a Landy without an MOT is worth about a thousand pounds. With an MOT, solid chassis and good engine, I would imagine it's worth towards £3k - possibly more.

Hope the work goes to plan and you can move on and enjoy it again. You could buy any other second hand car on a forecourt and you'd lose £1000 straight away so stick with it and keep the faith.
 
All back and up and running , drove for first time since November today , seems great , work they did looks good , I'll include pictures when I've got a minute , very happy !
Brilliant! What are we all going to worry about now!
