One of the failure point was:

"Nearside front disc contaminated by oil"

Do you think this is the caliper? I also have an advisory that both swivels are leaking - is this the likely culprit?

Swivels, if it was a caliper leaking that would have been a reason for a fail also.

If your brake fluid was leaking you'd have noticed when you crashed into the back of something. Easiest way to find out what the problem is is to stick your head under there and have a look.

Aye!! sound advice there hughesy, but can I just add, notlight, not being rude but if ya had to ask advice on that then please for gods sake don't try and repair it yer self mate. :welcome2:

You could always try tasting it, brake fluid has a bitter taste, gear oil a slightly creamy taste. Oh and anti freeze taste sweet but dont try it cos it is very bad for you :D

Discoandy is correct - took it to bits today and after removing the hub the bearings are as slack as a bag of spanners. The tester was a bit extreme though - the 'contamination' consisted of the ring of rust around the inside of the brake disc (i.e. where the pads dont contact), being slightly darker shade of rust due to oil. The contact area was untouched.
