Hi, does anybody know how the Brake Test is done in an MOT? If the front wheels are driven by the rollers whilst the back wheels are stationary then does the VCU lock up and send the vehicle hurtling forwards? I ask because I have received a cheap MOT voucher from a Suzuki franchised / all makes garage but did not want to go there if they were unable to do things properly. Last year the MOT was carried out by the Main Stealer as part of an approved purchase scheme. Thanks for any info.
 
Gaylanders are fine on a 2 wheel rig.

Thats not true. If the front wheels are driven on the rollers then the VCU will lock up and transfer drive to the back wheels. The car will indeed depart from the test bed. I also understand that it is common to road test.
 
should be tested using a decelerometer (I think that's spelt right). The unit is usually placed on the floor in the passenger footwell, then the vehicle is taken out on the road. The vehicle is then braked and the reading noted.
 
Here in Belgium the mot is done in certified official testcentres. The brakes are tested on the normal roller braketest unit but when it handles about a 4x4 they use a remote control box to modify the braking sequence against the normal 2wheel driven cars. Not sure but it's possible they test wheel by wheel as also for the rear brakes and the handbrake they do it on these two rollerbanks testunits.
 
Hello all.

I have had my TD4 brakes tested pre MOT at my firms workshop on site. we have an MOT standard brake tester. It applies drive via friction rollers to one axle per time.

You then apply the brakes and it gives you your reading.

The weird thing is it does not shoot forwards and the brake test functions normally. And before you all say it, my vcu is fine and working thank you glady.

Now in theory i understand what you are saying in the way the freelander transfers its drive but the brake testerworks!
 
Was wondering about the handbrake test on me 110, dont want em driving it an yanking the handbrake on:)
 
modern mot rollers can contra rotate the drums to allow for 4x4s the ploblem comes when you have things like trutracs and lim slip diffs and don't inform the tester, most places will use a tapley meter and do a road test just too be on the safe side, but it is the job of the vehicle owner to inform the MOT tester of any special parts fitted to the vehicle before the test, also it is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure the timing belt is ok before the emissions test is performed (i.e. the diesel smoke test) as this puts alot of strain on the timing belt and can cause it too snap( i have seen it happen and write off a car)
 
while i was an apprentice a bloke brought a motor in it stripped the belt did 8 valves, 2 pistons a con rod, the turbo and the head the bloke tried to go to the ministry they basicly told him to **** off, they came round to check we had the relevant signs up, the one that says YOU are responsible for the up-keep of your vehicle and if the timing belt fails its your fault
 
Likewise, in the days when the govenour could get stuck and apply a high injection demand without compensating for engine speed. Best move then was RUN!!
