Good evening all
I have had the common M&S lights flashing
no gear indicator on the dash display
so after reading through the posts here I removed my XYZ switch and opened it up
There was a dirty patch on one of the contacts which i cleaned with 2000 grit wet and dry
no signs of damp or Arching contacts.
then refitted the switch hoping for no M&S flashing
but it still does
I also followed the wiring loom through the switch and checked it for continuity and all appeared to be good

so Borrowed Nanocom (NANOCOM1) and read the inputs from the BCU
it would appear that the BCU is reading a signal from the XYZ switch
when changing through the gears the individual readings change from OFF to ON
which tells me the contacts are making the required circuit.
and unless I'm looking in the wrong place there are no faults stored on the ECU

but as expected the car will only actually select D and R

can anyone help with further diagnosis please ?
Also when reading the BCU through NANOCOM the rest of the car does some weird stuff
windows don't work
fuel gauge shows empty with the warning light on (tank is full)
speedo doesn't work
rev counter doesn't work
indicators don't work
low beam headlights come on
there may be other things ,that's just what i spotted

IN ADDITION I've just been out to check that when reverse is selected the reverse lights work and the rear wash wipe comes on as it should, and both work correctly when reverse is selected

If you've only read the BCU with the Nanocom, I would read the autobox ECU as this will store fault codes.

There is another fairly common fault which will flash M&S which is the loom from the switch chafes around the P clip and brings up all sorts of odd fault codes in the autobox ECU, depending which wires(s) have been damaged.

Good luck.

Hi pop pops
Where Do I find the autobox ecu in nanocom please I’ve looked but can’t see anything for autobox
Sake

I'm assuming you have a Nanocom Evolution.

Select "Discovery II", then "TD5" (I'm assuming you have a TD5), then select the "right arrow" in the green circle at the bottom of the screen which will give you more options, then select "D2 Autogearbox". The "Faults" section is the first option. Well, it is on my Nanocom!

Cheers.

He did say he'd checked the wiring loom from the switch, but I agree that this really does need a proper looking at as so many peeps have said that it is buried under the insulation and well hidden. Tends to give random intermittent problems, sometime when turning in one direction or another.;)

no
As I said in my original post I have nanocom 1
Where should I start to look on the loom ? Inside or outside the truck
Is there a common place where they foul ?
Like the fuel pipes betweeen chassis and body at the rear that foul

no

Outside, on the top where it is held onto the transfer box by a P clip, you should be able to feel for it from underneath.

I assume you mean the loom from the switch connector going forwards ?
The small loom on the switch is ok
I’ve had that off and it’s fine

It is easier to access the cable via the centre console once removed, as it can be clearly seen then, but it CAN be got at from underneath, just follow the silver foil covered cable around and over the top of the transfer box. It is secured by the notorious P clip on the top of the box that wears through the insulation and causes all sorts of problems. Easy fix using heatshrink tube or pipewrap.

so this morning I removed the loom from the car and it looked like this
IMG_1675.JPG
worn and black
as can be seen from the second picture
one wire has completely worn through
so ive repaired that and another that was slightly worn

replaced the loom and I still have the same issues.flashing M&S
Any ideas where to look next ?
I've read somewhere the the transmission controller under the passenger seat could be the issue so ive bought another just in case
my snap on reader says position switch fault
Nanocom appears to show the switch working correctly
i can clear the fault with the snap on reader but it comes back on within 15 seconds
I dont think its the BCU as everything else on the car works fine

So glad that you have found at least some of the problems.:)

Right this evening I resolved the issue
im amazed at how it happened
Landrovers are just F****** weird
I went in to the BCU with nanocom and told it that it was a diesel Automatic ( which I know I have NEVER previously changed )
and Bingo NO M&S light
and almost everything works as it should
I had to re programme the doors for single point entry
only issues now are the hazards DONT flat when locking for the alarm
and if i leave one door open then lock it the wrong horn sounds ????

It is not unusual for Nanocom to change settings for no apparent reason. Auto to manual and vica versa is a common issue, as well as various others. Glad you have it sorted now.
