Alright cheers for all the help.I think, to fit an SU carb, you need an adapter plate between the carb and manifold and you may have to convert to a cable throttle but Im not sure it will provide any noticable difference on power. 60mph is about top whack on a straight road for a 2.25 petrol engined landy. A 1962 engine will be 7:1 compression ratio, you could get the head skimmed to give you 8:1 or even a little higher but it all costs money and for the effort involved, you may as well get the tuned Turner head.

Pah, hills are no problemI think they are just fine as is, but show them a hill and all bets are off.

Weight reduction!!As Col says likely a 7|1 compression so without spending the dosh you can only make sure what you have is tip top.
What tyres do you run ? Knobbly one's take more power which they usualy convert into noise.
And often I see landy's used as mobile store sheds with a heap of stuff [ weight ] that does not need to be there and things like roof bars that add extra drag. If not being used take them off.
Mine has the zenith and I wouldn’t mind keeping it origional. How much use would a SU carb be?Mine struggles a bit on the sort of hills you wouldnt want to cycle up, even if you are fit, third gear seems to hold it at about 30 with the original zenith carb. SU and Webber carbs move the power band but dont increase the total bhp.

I’ve probably missed something but what made the change.We havea hill down here I have been driving up this hill pertty much every day for 25 yrs so it is my test hill as such, its not massively steep but is quite long, my D3 can do it at 80, on a good day kiss 90, the s2 2 litre diesel would go up it in third at maybe 30mph and that was a struggle, now it will go up there at 60 all day long.
I should imagine a s2 2 litre with 2 people and some sort of load in the rear would be interesting!
Alright there beginning to sound like a likely upgrade for me. Did it improve the top speed at all?I converted mine to an SU carb and it made a huge difference to how it ran, seemed much smoother and more instant low down power, put your foot down and off it went.
I can't say if there was any more power, likely not, but i never felt it was lacking, even fully loaded with camping and scuba equipment and tugging a dive boat along the A55, never had a problem, the hill at St Asaph is a long haul but didn't struggle
Cheers will doI would check ignition timing taking into account the wear in distributor drive components which can throw it out a lot if you set it static

Okay that sounds alright. I live in Herefordshire so most my journeys are in lanes where it sounds like it will be perfectly capable. I’ll just have to avoid motorways at all costYou can't really increase top speed, the limiting factor is the long stroke of the engine.
I could happily run an indicated 50-55 all day, that was fast enough for an old vehicle.
Overdrives will reduce the revs for a slightly quieter ride but not really designed to make you go quicker
