Rigth i now have new gearbox issues, my second gear has started jumping out while engine breaking down hill, it jumped out about 6 or 7 times on one shoot this weekend that was only about 100m long wihch was a bit worrying. Does anyone know what this could be? It basically wont stay in 2nd unless im accelerating and jumps out withaloud clunk not just slipping out that i would expect from poor detent springs.

Any help would be much appreciated but im guessing its new box territory :(

I had similar issues with the previous gearbox I was using, possible causes that I'm aware of are weak selector springs or a worn\broken synchromesh. The springs can be replaced easily if you wanted to eliminate them, if it's not them I would suggest rebuild or replace (Ashcroft do refurbished S3 gearboxes). I purchased an S3 gearbox on ebay for £25, stripped it and rebuilt it. Been working fine for 18 months.

you could try rear mainshaft nut it comes loose allowing too much end float between 1st and second gears much above 8 thou is enough to make gears jump out ,also except for d suffix boxes dog teeth which synchro hud engages to select gear are straight which allows some jumping out of gear on sudden torque change ie accelerating hard or deaccelerating suddenly, this is made even worse as dog teeth wear to point drivingf in that gear becomes impossible

How hard was the rebild job? I think maybe thats the way ill go, can the end float be checked in situ or is it a box out job anyways? I think an ashcroft box is well above my means :(

you can check nut in situ remove plate on left hand side of t/box ,rebuilding isnt too bad the art is in setting end float on mainshaft gears using variable sized thrust washers ,if you where near me i could help you

tis fair way if you do try i allways recommend landy owners should you could phone me if you wanted talk thru while doing it ,ive done hundreds so fairly sure how they go together properly

,used to work for lr reconditioner ,one of my first jobs was doing 60 series boxes, then similar for a few years after in batches take 2-3 weeks ,now i only do about 10 a year

Rebuild is relatively straightforward, proper S3 Operations and Parts manuals are essential as is access to a press. Parts are easy to find from L.R.Series or Craddocks. It takes a little time, if your not touching the transfer box and front output it would be quicker. When you're reassembling the box it pays to keep everything really clean. Parts I replaced were bearings, layshaft, 2nd & 3rd gears, both synchos, shims and all selector springs. Hope this helps.
