Would really appreciate some help and advice with my 01/Y Disco TD5 ES Auto. It's done 133k miles and I bought it a few months ago for what I thought was a bargain price (my wife keeps pointing out that my "bargains" never are!!!!).
I've just spent £950 on new front springs and shocks, new diesel connecting pipe that was leaking, new caliper and pads, MOT, service etc etc with an Independant L/R specialist.
However:-
1) A warning light (picture of car with two arrows pointing out) lights up when the car is started from cold but goes out after it is re-started when warmed up
2) Horrible rattle at about 2250 - 2500 revs during acceleration. Fine though outside that rev range
3) Fan - occasionally stays on after switching engine off and stays on for ages after (although switches straight off again if the ignition is restarted)
4) Steering wheel is off-centre - have had tracking checked but all fine

Despite all of the above I really like the car and it is much more practical for us than the Freelander it replaced. I would really appreciate your thoughts regarding these problems and suggestions on what to do next and how much it might cost?

FFS £950 all the parts wouldn't have cost much more than £300. My advice is invest in some tools and do your own repairs Oh and find a cheaper garage the last one has just bent you over and done a tweets on yer..

glad to see you moved away from the gaylander.
i previously had a td5 disco 2000 w reg.i spent over 6k on this inside 6 months on it u name it it i had probs with it.unfortunately with landrovers they break and things go wrong its part of owning a landy.the wife got so ****ed of with the disco that she went and got a brand new xtrail which has been faultless but i missed the joys of landy ownership so i got a td 90.great i thought,2k inside 3 months on mods and mechanical breakdowns...oh how we love our landys

I have a money pit Disco I - I know how you feel ;)
The warning light with the arrows may be a reference to the rear air suspension in so much as maybe it's taking its time to achieve normal ride height?
Diesels rattle abit anyway, I have no experience of the TD5 except they sound nice(!), maybe its a characteristic of a 5 cylinder diesel to sound abit rattly as they wind up?
If it was a 200TDI you'd ignore a rattle as you would probably not hear one above the din anyway.
As for the fan, its maybe an electrical fault where the car electrics aren't fully shutting down when the ignition turns off. Does the fan still run if you lock the car and the alarm/immobiliser arms?
The steering wheel should be dead centre if the tracking was set properly - it would be locked in the straight ahead position before any checks or adjustments would be made to the steering track rods.
IF and it's a big if, the tracking IS correct then maybe the rear is crabbing out of line of the front and that is why the steering wheel is slightly one way.

Land Rovers need not cost a huge amount of money to maintain if you are prepared to do the bulk of the work yourself, look for a specialist that really know their stuff.

How much was your bargain anyway???

steering wheel off centre usually means the last time the tracking was adjusted the wheel wasn't clamped properly... decent garage can sort that out for the cost of adjusting tracking

Re your warning light its the ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) which stops the disco from rolling when going round corners more than .4 of a G as in G force - The following is from the owners manual - hope this helps

Active cornering enhancement
(ACE) - RED/AMBER (if fitted)
The light illuminates RED when the starter switch is turned to position ’II’.
After two seconds, the RED illumination changes to AMBER, and after a further two seconds, the light extinguishes.
If illumination occurs while driving, a fault with the system is indicated, as follows:
If the light shows RED (a flashing red light which changes to constant illumination after two minutes, and is accompanied by a warning chime):
This indicates a system fault that may result in serious damage to vehicle components and reduced ACE performance. Stop the vehicle as
soon as safety permits and switch off the engine.
DO NOT CONTINUE DRIVING! Seek qualified assistance immediately.

No. 4 is easy, just slacken the adjustments on the rod (drag link) that links the steering box to the nearside wheel, and then turn to correct the steering wheel and then tighten. Sorry can't help with which way to turn.

No. 3 the fan switches on because the heat of the engine rises when the vehicle is parked after a run, the fan will run on while the preset temp setting is still there. It will stop soon after restarting because the coolent is now circulating.
U can always connect the fan via a relay to an ignition switch controled circuit.

£6k in 6 months!!!! & you lot slag us Freelanderers.

Thanks for the help guys - bloody hell, looking at some of your posts it sounds like I got of lightly spending under a Grand, maybe I should re-title the post as it seems I got a good one!!:D
Thanks for the warning biggeeee - the light only goes amber when cold but I will make sure I stop if it goes red
BoomerV8 - the "bargain" was £4400 but in my defence this was back in the spring!
Can anyone recommend a good (and cheap!) specialist around North Herts area?
Thanks again

With the ACE thing, you may have a dodgy accelerometer. This controls part of the Anti Roll Bar adjustment. There are two on the car, one on chassis and one up near mirror. It could be that one is fooked hence only the orange light. You can drive the car with the orange light, but the ACE isnt working, its just locked up at full stiffness.

Someone with test book should be able to find the problem mate
