Do the following:

Drive it off a cliff and make sure you land on your roof. Fatal injuries aside, get out if you can and the new orientation of the vehicle will provide you with a hassle-free view of whether your prop's connected to the rear diff or not.

Saves "hours" of tedium bending down and looking UNDER your FL...

We have a good spot just down the road called Beachy Head. A nice sea cliff some 600ft high and a favourite haunt of would-be suicidists. Every car I've seen that's gone off that particular precipice over the years seems to have always landed on its roof.
 
like singovel said try it on wet grass but perferable up a hill if the vcu aint woking the front wheels will just spin if it is working then you will just move but please make sure you are NOT near a cliff or you will please somebody on here

Maybe you didn't realise at the time, but my suggestion about the damp grass was absolutely serious.

A Freelander with VCU working and all the bits performing as they should, will not spin wheels on wet grass - it just gets going - same on snow, or mud - it just goes.

If the front wheels spin you ain't got 4X4.

i went on wet grass today and it was easy to get all 4 wheels spining only all 4 spin if its working ok

Ah well - I'm wrong then. :(

I was basing what I said on my experience towing a 2tonne trailer with the Freelander which just moves off smoothly across the field.

My Sprinter van, even with diff-lock on, just digs itself into the ground.

I use the Freelander to get the trailer out of the field and onto tarmac where the Sprinter takes over.

I must try it tomorrow on grass without the trailer and see what difference the various Synergy settings make - perhaps the Synergy gives 'too much' power.

I know on the LandRover Experience day we had a Freelander on a very steep mud slope with all four wheels spinning. But I reckon gravity + maths, or Pythagoras or some such reason was the cause. :D

It may have a certain recon'd or should that be re "conned" vcu supplied by a certain supplier who I believe we are prevented from naming .
I bought and fitted one and can say without any contradiction that you get fook all drive to the rear wheels when fitted .
